I gop to college at Rice University in Houston, just finished my first year.

I loved the city, but then again, I'm not there for the summer.

I went to school for 5 years in Houston. I loved the city; hated the climate. In the summer, you can take a shower in the morning and not get dry all day.

That's what drove me back to Dallas.

I'd be working as a linux sys admin for a network operations center. It's pretty much what I do now (remotely) but more hands on

It's disturbingly easy to acquire the taste, too.

Oh, and I wouldn't recommend the south for anyone, really, in terms of permanent location, but hell - if you stay here too long they'll MAKE you leave so you got that going for you

(i.e. it's worth it just to try it out and sock some money away)

Sweetened Iced Tea is not the drink of choice in any restaurant here. I have friends who come from Buffalo to visit and they bitch that there are very few places to get sweetened ice tea here. Alabama is more deep south and different from Texas. I'm not saying that Texas is any better, it's just not like Alabama.

Oh and nice school LordMorpheus

In my opinion it is truly a cesspool. I grew up in south texas so the climate is nothing for me, if not a little tamer than Corpus. But the people there may be more friendly than other bug cities but they are still really sh1tty. The traffic is unbearable except at 2am (most often made ernest attempts to drive then). But I hated the place for the summer I had to spend, it just drains the life out of you quickly. Most people I knew admitted that they would not have gone there if it weren't for the jobs. But I will tell you texas has a pretty low cost of living comparatively speaking to other major industrial or technology cetenr in america so it does come with advantages.

Edit: Also, adding to the traffic, it is resaonable to sometimes leave 1 or 2 hours before you need to be at work just to get there late.

the traffic is bad, the arts are good, the housing is cheap (in case you decided the one they pick for you doesn't suit), the tex mex is good, the bbq no so much (i got spoiled living in austin for 6 years), there are a ton of artsy coffee houses, local sports scene is great (we even have professional hockey, eh?).

and you'll be amazed at the women. was talking to a guy out by the pool yesterday, he's from indiana and he said that words just don't do the women here justice.

of course, if you don't swing that way houston has a very large gay population as well.

there are, contrary to popular belief, leftists here, but they have absolutely no organization (when your party ran the state for 150 years you don't feel any need to organize).

Traffic is awful, although if you decide to live close to the inner loop its not bad (living in Katy or the NW side is a no-no, takes me an hour to drive in to work every day). Dining is probably top 5 in the country (and I mean all dining, not just bbq and texmex). Good arts, symphony, sports scene. No real mass transit, the automobile is king and pretty much a requirement to live here.

The summers are brutal, but every place has AC. This in turn means the winters are mild. You'll never have to worry about snow and rarely have to worry about ice. The existance of spring and fall have not been confirmed I don't think.

While housing is cheap (in the burbs, 200k will get you a nice custom 3000sqft home), property taxes are *brutal*. $3.95 per 100 is not uncommon. Homeowners insurance is also very very expensive in Texas due to all the mold issues (and flood insurance is pretty necessary depending on what part of town you live).

Houston has the most annoying traffic of all of America. At least in NYC you can walk to a destination.

And, I'm not being racist, but there's a mofo ton of immigrants there, and that might not be cool with you.

In short, hell no.

Do it dude. At the very least go and check it out. Great opportunity to see a different part of the world, work in a slightly different culture and as a single guy, leave no ties. You won't lose your friends, it will just take a bit more effort to keep in contact.

Good luck.

Sure, do it. Try to live in an urban area like Memorial or Westheimer. You will think you're in a city that isn't a sprawling mess.
