Should I pay this parking ticket?

So my license plate was originally registered under a business so it's part of a fleet of vehicles with the same plate, let's call it 'XYZ 1'

My car is XYZ 1 -2

I got a parking ticket and the plate is listed as XYZ12

Seems incorrect, no? Wouldn't someone be able to register XYZ 12 if they wanted?

FYI, NJ plate, NYC parking ticket. Anyone have any clue whether the ticket is valid? I'm already a week late paying it so I'm not sure if it's too late the dispute it through the proper channels.

Do you think that (123) 456-7890 constitutes a different phone number from 123-4567890?

Because I doubt that the judge will.

Only fight tickets that you can beat.

so you're saying no one else can register a plate starting with XYZ followed by numbers?

your phone # scenario would be more like (123) 456-7890 extension 1 is the same thing as (123) 456-78901

I'm certainly not sure, but I think it's possible that the plate should have been written as just XYZ 1

If you listen to rap music then of course you don't pay.

If you listen to country you pay and leave a tip.

If you like rock and roll then hookers and blow.

Do I have no allies here?

Their website states
A ticket is not valid when the legally required information on it is missing or not accurate. When you request a hearing, we will review the ticket for these defects and dismiss it if any are found.

I don't think it's truly accurate. No one else agrees?

As a general rule, yes. However pissed off you are, unless you are clearly being wronged there will come a time when you look back and wish you'd just paid the damn thing.

Fighting the ticket and not paying the ticket are two separate things.

It sounds like you don't want to pay it. That is stupid since it will remain on your record and you will be forced to pay later with penalties most likely when you try to renew your registration.

If you don't want to pay then you must go through the official process to fight the ticket.

You have to ask yourself if it is worth the time and effort to do so. Might be cheaper just to pay the ticket.

You never said what the ticket was for and if you deserved it or not. Pay up, the city needs money.

Sure, waste a vacation day going to court.
When you get there, they will set a court date for you to come back in.
So you will waste 2 vacation days hoping to save $80, for something you know you did.

Is it just a license plate format that doesn't line up across state lines? I've never seen a subscript -2 in my state...

Depends... did you actually violate the law and are just trying to find a loophole to get out of it? Or do you actually think they ticketed the wrong vehicle and you're wondering if it's worth the fight?

If the former, then pay up you worthless deadbeat

Had a parking ticket in a city San Francisco I never visited during the time I supposed to have gotten the ticket. Anywayz, the state wouldn't let me renew my vehicle registration until I paid the ticket... Didn't bother fighting when I failed to get a hold of anyone. Wasn't worth my time for however much it was. It's been awhile.

Oh I suspect the ticketer may have transposed a letter

Can you contest by mail? In Chicago you can and factually incorrect ticket is one of the like 3 reasons to contest. Might as well give it a shot. I don't think you have a great chance, but its worth writing a letter, but probably not a trip to the courthouse.

Well then...there ya go. Refuse to pay the ticket on the principle of the thing.

Assert your stance of dominance!

You should pay it or fight it. Don't just ignore it.

How much is the ticket? Is it worth your time to fight it?

If so, fight it. If not, pay it.

If you ignore it, you will rack up massive fines.

This is the whole point of the thread, the -2 is technically not part of the plate #, it signifies it is car #2 registered with the XYZ 1 plate. That can't be a new jersey only thing, can it? Maybe it's uncommon enough that the cop wrote it incorrectly. I would think a parking cop would know, though? I was pulled over once because a cop ran the plate and it pulled another of the cars (maybe XYZ12 would have worked lol)

So that being said, if the ticket is on the record for XYZ12, I could feasibly ignore it and not worry about the ramifications, as that is not my license plate #

It's a parking ticket, meter expired. Car is registered in NJ, ticket is NY. I'll probably just pay it to be safe but thought I'd see if anyone could shed some useful information. I would contest it (you can do it online) but I think I'm too late for that.

Establish the stance of dominance and don't pay. In fact, write to them what you think of their ticket.

You're probably safe if you never plan on returning with that car to the town in which you got the ticket.

Although, I have to admit ... this might be really bad advice.
