if you have decent thermal paste, then get rid of the stock thermal interface... if your looking for performance, pick up a tube or artic silver...

Ok, I am in the same situation as you and this is what I have gleamed from my searching.

-yes take it off, take it off now and get yourself some Arctic Silver
-use a razor blade and run it flattly along the gorb to take off the majority of the goop
-use an automotive degreaser (I have WD-40 and read I could use this, if anyone knows I shouldn't please let me know heh), rub it till it's clean and then..
-use rubbing alcohol, the purer the better to get every last bit of the goop and any oils from your hands off of it, use a lint-free cloth for this (like lense cleaners) until you can't see anything on the cloth after you have cleaned it
-apply a small amount of thermal paste to the processor NOT the heatsink and use a clean credit card or the like to smooth it out into a paper thin layer. All you need is enough to create a surface to surface link, not a juicy sandwich.

Someone who knows better could correct me if I am wrong and please do since I haven't actually done this yet.

Remember to keep everything clean, don't touch anything with your hands that is going to be making a connection, oils are bad.

Hope this helps

Dont use WD40 man, that stuff is greasy....and it leaves a residue in my experiences, use isopropyl or commonly known as Rubbing Alcohol. also apply a thin layer to the sink and also the cpu.

scrape pad off with finger nailsor plastic knife or something... you reallt shouldnt take a chance on scratching the heatsink with a metal object or razor blade...

use GooGone to remove the stickyness and then alcohol to prep it nice for the thermal compound...

GooGone is everywhere! K-mart, hardware store, probably even grocery... everyone needs this stuff around!!

Well I went ahead and lapped my gorb!
I followed this tutorial HERE.
Unlike the guy who made this tutorial I managed to get a mirror like finish with a little extra time with the fine sandpaper.

I am glad I did it too, there was a divot from the lathe that Thermal Take's machinists must have been using and overall the base was concave. But now mine is perfectly flat. I think it also helped the fact that some gorbs are hard to get seated from alot of resistance.

If you are thinking of taking the extra step I recommend following this guy's tutorial. Make sure you do the figure 8's!

rub it off with a cotton rag.

use some artic silver if you build more than one machine a month, its actually cheaper... i got a tube that did 10 machines for $13 or something. might as well use the best if its cheap.

if you're only doing like one machine a year, then the 'other stuff' works fine. i'm using $0.99 paste on my personal machine, check my sig for results :]
