These seemed over priced though. I picked up Fallout 1 and 2 for two dollars a few years ago from AAFES.

Edit - A question though, do those HiRes patches work with the unofficial patches?

Long story short I think Bethesda's version will be a shallow far cry of what Fallout 1 and 2 brought to the table.

I disagree. Gameplay is king, not graphics. While a graphical remake would be nice, I've played FO I and II at least eight times since I bought them four years ago. Even after all this time, I'm still discovering (or hearing) about different ways to play the game. One of the coolest tips I've picked up is for an assassination mission, you plant some dynamite on a kid and ask him to go to his father. *Boom* Target's dead and you don't have to worry about angry guardsmen

As someone who played Pong when it was just released, and Fallout 1 when it was just released, I see things differently. More than most old games, these hold up.

FO 1&2 hold up just fine. I went through some WoW burnout and needed some single player goodness. I played through both games. Another great thing about them, is that they would play on an older laptop if you have one lying around.

I didn't even know about the graphic enhancement patches. I'm going to have to check that out!

Might want to re-read what I wrote. I was extolling the gameplay of Fallout 1 and 2, not damning it.

With Fallout 3 coming out later this year, would you guys recommend playing this, rather dated, game to experience the games themselves and to get acquainted with the Fallout background/history in anticipation for Fallout 3?

Or is this game too old and dated to get into? I remember hearing that there are some recent mods/patches out for the game, would anyone know of a resolution mod, much like the one for the BGs and Planescape? Getting a copy wouldn't be that difficult, the Fallout collection is at Gogamer for 20 bucks.

Never too old! Hell, I just replayed Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics last summer
For that matter, I just recently revisited WC 3, 4, Prophecies, Privateer 2 and Freespace.

After you play through FO1, FO2, Arcanum (at least) once, be sure to read the Fan-Based message boards (google for them) to chuckle at the many many weird and/or funny stuff you missed due to your RPG gaming style. For example: Dialog choices for an extremely low IQ avatar; mid-to-late-game quest options missed due to early game avatar choices; special encounters off the 'beaten paths'; etc

Actually, I replied to your message by mistake. I meant to respond to the guy who was telling the OP not to play them at all

Does anyone know why, if I use the high res patch in fallout 1 that I get a black screen upon a new game start that only reveals my character and then uncovers whatever is under the mouse trail? Thanks for any help.

That's a well-know issue that Fallout I has with modern computers/newer versions of Windows even before the hi-res patch. And by "newer" I mean "this happens to me constantly in Windows 2000 when I replay that game:. The easiest thing to do is to pull up the Pip-Boy or go to the character screen, then go back. It'll turn the screen normal for awhile, but the black screen will periodically come back.

They are not easy games, but when you get used them its well worth it. They are however very old, when I did not have the net for 4 months, I started playing fallout 2 and it was very fun, its better if you read the storyline. If you decide to play, you will find yourself thinking wtf thats not supposed to happen in a video game.

The Fallout games are probably my favorite PC games ever.
I usually end up playing Fallout 2 at least once every 18 months and it always puts a smile on my face.

Thank you everyone for your input, I did end up purchasing the game and I've been playing FO1 pretty much all day since I got it this morning . It took a while to get accustomed to the rather "archaic" yet rather intricate gameplay than most modern games. Once I got used to it however, I was immediately drawn into the game and story, I love it

I do however have a few questions (might contain spoiler!!!):

1. Can someone explain the armor class and threshold? The manual doesn't really go into much detail about either.

2. I happened to stumble upon a huge cache of weapons and items in the Old Town of the Hub... There are two footlockers that are in the northern part of the map, right above the guns dealer in that area. These two footlockers seem oddly placed because you gain access to, I'm sure, some very expensive equipment you couldn't normally have access to right off the bat (super sledge, sniper rifle, combat armor, etc.) .. I did patched FO1 with the latest official patch and the resolution patch so I don't know if these have anything to do with it. Since I am using the resolution patch, I can see parts of the map that extend way beyond what would normally be seen if the patch wasn't applied, which is where I think the footlockers are placed. Anyone have any clue as to WTF these are there?

3. Any UI mods? Going through inventory is almost equivalent to Mass Effect's inventory screen

#2: I think you might have stumbled on the arms dealer's merchandise. I'm not sure though, I can't really remember finding any footlockers full of equipment that I didn't kill/talk my way over to.

Given the open nature of the game, you can end up with some weird equipment early on as I recall. You'll find out though that the sniper rifle and combat armor are kind of midrange I think. So it doesn't seem too odd to me. And by the way, with the sniper rifle, you can aim at specific areas of the body. Sooooo much fun.

Laser rifle all the way. Don't just blow limbs off, cut people in half!

I loved all of the Easter eggs. Or specializing in unarmed so that I could knock people down and land crits on their head. I finished 1 and 2, but never completed Tactics. There was one mission that I just could not finish without losing a man. One of my men critically failed a disarm and blew up the whole minefield.

I lol'd.

I'm definitely about to find my friend's copy of FO 1&2, I had totally forgotten about them and still remember playing the demo over and over again. The demo. Can't wait for the real deal!

Thanks for the links man...I installed Fallout on my laptop (1900 x 1200)

Installed patch 1.1
Installed the High Resolution Patch...

For an old game it scaled beautifully and looked as good as could be considered based on the age of the game!

Time to relive 1997!
