anyone else get the feeling that xchangx is the guy. i mean he listed all of what the guy is selling and at what price. then he doesn't reply to the thread at all. with an email address at the bottom ( i know a lot of us do that) and pm's it would be pretty easy for him to unload this stuff if he were so inclined.

i'm probably wrong (like usual) but just an observation.

<< There's a guy here on campus that's selling bootleg software.
AutoCAD 2002 for $20
Matlab 6 release 12 for $30
Norton Antivirus 2002 $20
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 platinum $30
Windows XP Professional $30
Office XP Professional $30

I know these are bootleg because I emailed him a while back asking about it.
What do you guys think I should do?
>>

Well, I do dislike pirated software, but if you're going to get someone busted for it, be sure of the following:
-You want people at your school to hate you if they find out
-All of the software on your machine is not copied. That means the copy of Windows on your machine is installed only on that machine. If it's an OEM copy from another machine, that breaks the license. If you can't say this, then you're just as bad for consuming bootlegs (and hypocritical).

I know of two guys at my school who got busted for this (for stupid reasons) and this guys time will come.

excuse me while I go profit off all the rest of your guys' work...

Set up a server with all the software for free. I've never been to a college campus where you couldn't get all that for free... are you at a really small school or what?

Since he's stealing from ME personally, why don't you send me the information via a PM. We have people who take care of these things for example these foks...

Sorry but I am going to say turn him.

I did this at Kobey's swap meet. A guy had set-up and was selling ofice 2k for 50 and norton for 25. Windows 98 was like 35.

Yes all my software is licensed too.

I would contact the manufactures most of them have antipiracy hotlines.

The height of hypocracy is being unable to admit you yourself are a hypocrite. Everyone is one, it's a naturally human behavior. Personally I'm a strong believer in Karma, you get back what you sow people. You don't report crimes that you see and no one will report similar crimes when they happen to you.

Personally I wouldn't report this to the police, I would call each companies piracy hotline. I would start with MS then call AutoCad, after an hour on the phone you should be able to have called everyone and if you don't do it anonymously you might get a reward from the companies. It's one thing to steal, its another to steal then sell copies.

It really supprises me how many people in here actually look the other way at crime being commited. Next time someone steals from you, don't complain.

So its ok for me to steal from you as long as I dont sell it?

I dont know why people say that its ok to pirate something, but not ok to sell the pirated item. What kind of logic is that? If there's one thing you know about software, it's that someone is always gonna pirate it. And if there's something you know about human nature, it's that someone is always gonna try to make a quick buck. Stealing is stealing, whether you resell the item or not. If you're gonna turn in the guy for selling pirated software, you should also turn in anyone you know that uses pirated software, including yourself. And since we know the latter aint gonna happen....

That's crazy expensive for bootleg software! Over here there are guys selling locally for $5-$10 CAN ($3.5-$6.5 US)! Tell him to lower his price or you will report him!

No, its never right to steal. It's worse if you steal from me once, then proceed to steal from me again and again and again. Get it? You steal something once by pirating software, for every copy you sell you stole it again and profited from that theft. Stealing is bad mmmkkay? Don't rationalize it and don't bring hypocracy into it, stealing is bad and even theifs can call others theifs too. People stealing software and reselling it is akin to robbing a store every time you want a couple bucks.

take him out. If he was giving it away, I'd say leave him alone. But to sell stolen goods...

I agree with most of you...
First of all, I'm not the person... All the software I have I use to learn then get rid of it (2k Server,...)

I don't have a problem if they give the copies out to friends for a few bucks. I just have a problem when people sell them. It's like selling burned music cds on Ebay.
I sent him an email asking if the win xp was legit and he said pretty much that what Microsoft doesn't know, won't hurt them.

I have his email address. But I'm kind of hesitant to give it out.

Either way, I may report him or not.

Report him provided you can come up with the original cd's of every piece of software that you have installed on your machine that is not freeware or shareware, up to an including any mp3...

If not you are a hypocrite...

bah, thers a big difference between what you do your self and selling your ill gotten gains.

for instance.. plagerizing your essay = stupid personal action + depriving self of education.

selling plagerized essays or publishing a plagerized work = plain out theft.

frankly, it would be much fun to jerk this guy around sweet anonymous blackmail perhaps

but thats a crime too ig uess ah well.

and if you buy or sell pirated software or music, how can you possibly complain about the music companys? you say they rob the artist/programmer ?? hell your robbing them 100%

Based on the replies on this thread, we all know who passed and failed Applied Ethics 101.

I witnessed an old lady back her car into a parked car. I informed the driver of the second car what happened as she left a store to go to her car. An employee at the strip mall started to complain about my action. I asked her, "What if it were your car?" and she complained no more.

I wouldn't call the police. Alot of the time, police have no idea about this kind of stuff. This kind of stuff is best reserved for FBI, whom handles nearly all intellctural property rights violations. Find an FBI office near you and report him along with a copy of confirmation letter he sent you. Being college student is no excuse for this kind of activity. I'm not a piracy advocate and I don't think its right for people to use pirated software with an intention of not paying for it, but distributing the intellctural property of someone else for his own income pisses me off alot. He has no right to own it, let alone distribute it as if he owned it. If you were the author of a paper, you wouldn't have a problem with people turning it in and receiving an award as if it was theirs? Take it with the FBI, then the school administration. Try your best to get him expelled from school. School officials can very likely kick him out after a nice confrontation with an FBI agent about a student conducting federal crime upon their property.

Report the bastard online. FBI Tips and Public Leads form, even though the link says terrorist, FBI site says it can be used to report any federal law violation.

Or your local FBI field offices, which you can locate on here. Let's see if we can get him locked up. That'll be hella funny

Americans in general dislike snitches more than they dislike criminals. Stand above the average American and rat the guy out. Don't even worry about the fact that most people would consider you scum, hell what do they know? I just turned in a Homeless shelter for battered women because they had on copy of an unlicensed of MS Millenium. Tomorrow I'm going to rat out a local Church and the next day a Hospice for the terminally ill!
