<< > Why get yourself involved in something that doesn't hurt anyone?

This hurts me PERSONALLY. The person is stealing money from ME. I know thats a hard concept to grasp.

> He is doing a favor to college students

How would you feel if he was STEALING your work? Would you be so gracious then?

Unfortunately, most college students don't have much money and need to use some of these programs that cost an arm and a leg to complete assignments. Personally, I would be a little upset with the guy selling them because a cd costs .10 and he is making a huge profit but if he priced at $3 or so to make it reasonable it wouldn't bother me. Students using these programs are using them for educational use which is a positive.

They should either find alternatives they can afford or get the programs through their school. I cant afford to spend the time writing a paper for class, Ill take yours and turn it in. Thats fair right?

It's called a job and/or a computer lab at school. Even if it's used for an educational purpose, it doesn't make it right.

Edit: BTW, there are software that's freeware.

yes. theft is theft is theft is theft...and me being in a buisness where the industry is theved daily with false CC info, stolen and compremised numbers I dont appreciate people doing things like this. its kinda like some dood who rips off one of the designs I pay for, taking it to a print shop and getting them to print him the patterns on shirts then selling them undercutting my buisness using MY designs...(sorry if it doesn't make sense, I need to hit the SACK)

you could say that about anything at school. why pay for food at the cafeteria if your a poor college student. just take what you can and stuff it under your shirt. pens, pencils, pencil lead, binders etc, just stuff that under your shirt too. books? over priced big time.. stuff that under your shirt too.

and software thats required for schooling are sold at discount to students.

Selling pirated software is *completely* different than wife beating. They're both wrong, but the beating is worse by a few million orders of magnitude. They don't even compare.

Let's see, jobs, grants, educational versions, freeware versions...

My friend got a $450 discount on a software suite (can't remember the name), by getting the educational version. Just flash the college ID card.

What do you do for a living? Programmers live off of the money made by legit sales. High end programs cost a lot because they take a lot of time. Mathematica was harder to make than 101 Solitare Games. I see nothing wrong with trying the full version of a program, then deleting it (which is still illegal mind you).

Some things you can't get anymore. Companies don't sell them, or they went out of business. All of those things that this dude is selling are still sellable. If you don't like them, don't use them. Free versions of a whole lot of programs exist, even if they aren't pretty.

I look at it this way: mind your own business. If trouble starts tapping YOU on the shoulder THAN turn around.

30 bucks? wow, that's like a legit copy of a game here. i can get ANYTHING for 100 bucks my currency (say 2 USD) in a public place like a mall. games, oses, software, dvd, music cds...you name it. no BS, no crap, they just deliver. piracy is widespread in my country.

Schools usually have a computer labs with these programs already installed for such use. If not, students should talk with the instructor about this roadblock. Simple as that.

Giving out to a few good friends or trafficketing stolen property for personal revenue to unknown people is a different crime. The first one, he'd probably get away with warning, but once he starts charging United States legal tender or securities it is legally a transaction. Even though some college students might argue that he is doing them a favor in his defense, but it is clear that his purpose is malicious. His main interst is making "easy money", rather than being a help to others.
He is not any better than slaveowners. He is making someone else work for the creation of intellectural property, then put the 100% of revenue in his own pocket.

WRONG!!
Part of being an adult is gathering up the stones to what is right.
I haven't read the entire thread because 90% of it is morally bankrupt.
Kranky got it right on the first page.

<< Quite a boatload of rationalizations here.

Should you not do what is right because someone else might not like it?

If someone keyed your car, punched your gf, or stole your wallet, would you accept this excuse?

Whether you decide to report this or not, I will offer one piece of advice:

PLEASE don't let your ethics be determined by the people on this board.

Turn him in, he knows what he's doing is akin to selling drugs, *some agree with it, some disagree with it, it's obviously illegal, so:

If you agree with selling pirated works for money let him be, if not turn him in;

You've got to follow your own moral judgement on this, no one else will

apparently you've never had to purchase these items with your own money unless you somehow seem to have an endless supply.... but most people, like myself, are paying too many bills and not making enough money to get $100 software.
i would love to run into someone like him in my neighborhood. and the downside is.... i get no technical support and cannot register my product.... that's ok, that's what this site is for right?

No. This site is not here to facilitate your illegal pirating of software.

And if poverty is an excuse for theft, I believe every car-less person out there should be entitled to your car. With your lack of morality and ethics, you have no room to object.

Learn the definition of "Vigilante" before tossing it around so ignorantly.

Main Entry: vig·i·lan·te
Pronunciation: "vi-j&-'lan-tE
Function: noun
Etymology: Spanish, watchman, guard, from vigilante vigilant, from Latin vigilant-, vigilans
Date: 1865
: a member of a volunteer committee organized to suppress and punish crime summarily (as when the processes of law appear inadequate)

Turning in someone for a crime is not vigilantism, it is being a responsible citizen. Vigilantism would be punishing the guy yourself, instead of having him busted and stand trial. If no one stood up and did the right thing, criminals would run free. That's the last thing I want in a society I live in.

Alright, so maybe I misused the word vigilante...I just really hate people that take it upon themselves to report crap...like one day it was 3 in the morning...and there was one of those speed measurement thingies on the road...so I decided to see how fast I could get going...I got up to about 85...some guy is way behidn me...drives up at 95...takes down my plates and reports me for speeding. Anotehr time a few friends and I were watching a drive in movie...theres this highway that runs about 20 feet to the right and we were o nteh other side of the railing. Like 20 of us were lying on our cars...some dumbass lady decides to call the cops and report that there was a shooting and 20 kids were lying dead on their cars...to make a long story short 20 cops descended on us and frisked us all...all we were doing was watching a damn drivein movie on the other side of the freeway. Sure, I think you should report thing such as murder or rape or something huge...but little crap like this when you KNOW they're going to get busted...why? Its pointless and you should mind your own business

Money doesn't grow on tree, my grocery cost too much, I have to pay for my kid's food, my wife costs too much money, etc etc are just some reasons you don't have the money to buy $100 software. Ok we got that. Quite frankly, those does not give you a right to buy/sell stolen property. What makes you think you have the right to use or especially sell these softwares? If you're that desperate for money, give up your computer unless you could prove that it is necessary.

<< i would love to run into someone like him in my neighborhood. >>

If it was in my neighborhood, you better believe his ass will be turned into the FBI. If he doesn't give a f$ck about other people's work and is inconsiderate enough to put their work into his pocket, why should I give a damn about his well-being? I'm gonna have to be an ass to him. I'll turn his ass in for every little fineable violations. (his/his visitor's car parked in violation of local ordinance, garage sell items on sidewalk, distributing hotdogs at garage sell to the public for money without a permit from the dept of health, building a shed without building permit, walking dogs without a leash and such)

you know what jackass?!... i don't have any illegal software and I AM DOING WITHOUT. why don't you open your closet door. DO YOU KNOW WHERE OR HOW THIS PERSON GOT THIS SOFTWARE.? MAYBE HE'S A DISTRIBUTOR OUT SOLICITING A PRODUCT TO YOUNG PEOPLE WITH LESS MONEY AND LESS TIME FOR THE FBI,. they do have something that is LEGAL sometimes and maybe he works his ass off to put that money in his pocket.
I SUPPOSE YOU ALSO BELIEVE IN OUR GOVT., and have no empathy for others because you,re a perfect soul in a perfect world.?
I am not a thief and I actually hate a theif and a liar, but I live in the real world and I don't feel sorry for those BIG companies (KINDA LIKE ENRON), who screw the real people working there anyway while they all get their money no matter what. If I had the opportunity to get good software for a good price, I would. I do not steal, and I have been stolen from, but like it or not, I believe there is a difference in how it affects one individual from a large corporation. I don't think they're losing any sleep over it and they'll make enough money to give an inheritance to several generations of grandkids. now stop being such an asshole. I'm sure the shoe never has or never will be on any feet of anyone you know or love.

So when a dozen people get laid off because some but pirate stole some software its ok? Screw that. Give people and companies what they deserve. If you dont like the company, dont use the software. Pirating the software is still supporting that company. Want something consumer friendly? Use free software, like Linux. Dont feel sorry for large companies when they get robbed? Well they shouldnt feel sorry for you. Go away now little child.
