If gas mileage is killing you, 16mpg is better than my 3.2L that gets 12/15mpg. I will never get rid of it until its on its last leg... or when I can afford a 4.6is.

Like someone said, it doesn't matter if it's a daily driver, you shouldn't be worrying about gas mileage and what it's costing you. You'll never be driving that M5 to its fullest potential on the Boston roads... am I right ?

haha, no comment
Why... why then, did you bother ? Let's hear it.

Plus I can't really drive it in the snow so its garaged for most of the year. The 4.6is is nice but it really chugs down the gas (16MPG). So as a daily commuter it's not 100% practical.

Perhaps something like the new Toyota Prius as a daily driver?

Holy crap, you sure have money. What do you do for a living?

The production of the E39 5-seres, E39 M5, and Z8 will cease this summer. The M5 could very well become a collector's item as the previous generations have. So, hold onto the M5. Sell the X5 4.6is and buy either a RAV4 or MINI Cooper as a daily commuter. Either should get over 25mpg.

I agree with most people, sell the X5... the M5 is just too sweet to let go.

As for the second car... since it's for commuting, I'd definitely get something that gets good gas mileage, and that also has a decent interior and is relatively quiet inside. You could go with something like a Maxima or a Passat, or even an Accord or something.

If you're used to commuting in one of your Bimmers, trying to merge into traffic in a Prius, for example, might be a little unnerving.

They don't look the same. One is a SUV and the other is a sedan. Stop posting in car threads.

ok if it was between a g35 coupe and an m5 on a snowy road the only reason i'd pick the g35 is because if i skid off the road i wouldn't care as much if i fscked it up.

That makes no sense. Are you saying that if you have money, you should have no regard for other people's opinions?

lol i've driven both and they are very far from being the same car. assuming that you are telling the truth and not just attention-whoring (if you're telling the truth, it'd be odd considering the way your posts are phrased, but to each his own)

the prius is too small and would be a stupid choice based on someone who has the income to support a new M5 and X5. your suggestion of the car as a daily driver (from both safety and comfort standpoints) is ridiculous. its gas mileage is decent but a civic hybrid is a nicer car for a few dollars more and gets almost the same milage. however, the civic has the same problems as the prius, small and no anemities and unsafe. you can always get a used car like an e34 m5 or 540 6spd and sell your M5, or smaller truck (if you still want the speed get a lightning, if you want the AWD get an audi or something along those lines.)

your dismissal of the fx45 b/c it's a little brother to the x5 (assuming you are dismissing it b/c the fx45 is not nice enough?) is odd b/c a prius is a PoS. if you're concerned about the quality of your car you wouldnt be considering the prius, so don't dismiss the fx45.

if you don't want a another bmw then say so or get bad advice. i'd sell the x5 since it chews gas and performs "poorly" and get a daily driver. there are a ton of cars available but you need to decide what price range you want, what performance you want, the safety required, and what kind of car you want among other things (truck / suv / sedan).

if you want a quick fix, sell the x5 and get a 325ix or 330ix.

I go with the majority when I say get rid of the X5. Buy yourself a fuel efficient car to commute to work and drive the M5 on your work time.

1. Sell the house in Boston
2. Leave your job in Mass. and become a 'software consultant'
3. Buy a house in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale/Boca Raton, a flat in the California Bay, or a ranch outside Austin
4. Keep the X5 if you move to Texas or California; sell it and buy a BMW M3 convertible if you move to Florida

People at AnandTech who have met me have seen all the cars I own. Well, some people saw the old X5 4.4i. Last June it was rearended by a truck and never drove right after repairs. That is how I ended up with the 4.6is. One member here took the 4.6 for a spin last time she was in Boston.

keep the M5 that is one of the best cars ever built. sell the X5 and wait for the WRX STi, 300hp, 300lb-ft. AWD and active center differential, gonna be a fun car to drive.

btw, the mileage for the M5 cant be that much better than the X5
