Why the hell do you want to start drinking coffee as a hobby, how about you pick up something beneficial as a hobby.

I'm incredibly bored with the usual stuff I drink... And I've also started learning C++ and cygwin.

Coffee isn't a hobby u tard.

Anyway, get yourself a bean grinder and coffee machine, and check out the selection at Costco and Trader Joe's. Basically, there are two species of coffee beans... "arabica" and "robusta". Make sure whatever coffee you buy is "arabica", NOT "robusta". You'll usually see this marked in small print somewhere on the packaging.

You might be able to find some good deals on machines in the Hot Deals forum. Gevalia gives away very nice machines for free with coffee purchase club subscriptions.

If you want to start, I'd suggest decaf to avoid the problems too much caffeine can cause. I've switched to decaf because I enjoy the taste but not so much the heart palpitations.

Making the coffee itself can be the hobby.

Coffee is good, as long as you don't get addicted like myself and drink about 59 oz in about an hour during school. =/

I think you should try finding something better though...--v

I'm not as addicted as you'd think. I'll drink it if its there, but I won't go make some because of a craving.

It's not addictive.

As with all stimulants, you will notice a slight aftereffect (headache) if you drink heavily every day, and then stop suddenly.

Yes, you should. There's lots of health benefits, especially for 3-4 cups a day.

i HATE coffee. I only can bear drinking the 'good' stuff. Like starbucks or fresh ground. And that is crap to me. I only NEED it some times to keep me awake through this boring @ss job i have.

It's a waste of time and money because you're body adjusts to it, and if you stop drinking it you'll actually be more tired than you should.

Only use it when you absolutely need it.

Green tea on the other hand is a different story. While there is caffeine, you'll get many health benefits from drinking it all the time.

Tea man. One of those beverages you'd think you wouldn't care for until you start drinking it unsweetened, and only 1/10 the caffeine.

Not to mention taking some heroin and PCP with it as well

I held off drinking coffee until I took a job on third shift (midnight - 8AM). Thought I was going to die.

Anyway, now I have at least one cup every morning. I always be sure to have a least one cup of the strong stuff about an hour before I start a Cisco Cert exam. Just to get the juices flowin.

However, someone told me about an article they read (wish I had a link) where a study was done about the effects of caffeine. The conclusion showed that the subject's brain activity showed a slight increase just after drinking a cup. Then after the high wears off the brain activity falls way below where it was before they drank it.

So, I'd say, yes. Start drinking it but, use it strategically (like if you have to study all night or maybe right before you go into a big exam). Don't drink it every day.

Actually I've heard that > 200 mg of caffeine a day is unhealthy. While there may be some benefits to coffee beans, there are so many more in green tea. Green tea has extremely powerful anti-oxidants that slow aging, and improve health in so many ways.

Also, you must drink green tea to get the benefits. Any other type of tea has nearly nothing because the way it is processed.
