The Founders Edition can be had at GeForce.com for $699, cheaper than the one in the link that you provided.
regarding AMD drivers.. I have owned about a 50:50 split between AMD and Nvidia since the 2000s..
Had you bought an equivalent to the 770, a Radeon 290, you would be able to run DOOM with Vulcan at any setting you desired. Why do I keep seeing what is perhaps the most badly burned generation of gpu buyers (Kepler buyers) actually thinking about returning to nVidia?
RS do you even own a GTX 1080?
The 1070 is already approaching the MSRP of $389 just look at this example

and reality is most AIB cards will be $399 or more to begin with only after some mail in rebates in the future to bring them down.
The 1080 is to me not worth $200-$250 more than the 1070 for what is it 30% more performance. If DOOM is your only concern then the RX 480 8GB @ $250 running Vulkan is without a doubt the price / performance champion.

I currently have a Geforce 770 4GB with a 4670k. I want to play the new Doom at full settings and have buttery smooth framerates. I've been waiting a bit now to snag a 1080 (non-FE) to pair with a 6700k so I can do so, while simultaneously giving my son my hand me down rig which will be an upgrade from his 3570k+750Ti 2gb.
I've been trying to find some info on when the 1080 are expected to be released in sufficient quantities that I can buy one without paying massively inflated over MSRP prices. Have there been any credible rumors on when this would likely happen or should I just suck it up and grab a 1070 and save a few bucks while im at it?
When the top card is barely faster than the 2nd tier, I will always pick 2-3 2nd tier cards. Guru3D and TPU did SLI reviews of 1070/1080 and for most AAA games scaling is great. That means 1070 SLI will demolish a 1080.
Maybe he just thinks Nvidia would be the best choice based on popularity and doesn't really know otherwise. I won't argue either way.
As far as the original poster goes it's really up to you what you want to purchase in the end.
If you really think you need a 1080 but are willing to settle for a 1070 because you can order one right now then the best option is going with EVGA. If you decide you need more than the 1070 just do the step up program.
Here's 2 currently in stock. Free expedited shipping.

so you want buy a new gpu just play doom? you will get bored after little time...so you better buy a gpu which performs good on everygame and not one game only...
this means an rx480 is to be avoided since it is 10%+ slower vs the gtx1060 has the same price but consumes 40w more and runs hotter...
personally i would go for an gtx1070 since it is on another category...
RadiclDreamer, since the issue has been raise, may I ask what type of monitor you are, or will be using? Thank you.
What with the craftsmanship, driver support and logo, that card basically sells itself at that price. What a steal! You should definitely get a GTX 1080. Here's a great deal on a Founder's Edition:
