SEO. It's more inline with your education than the helpdesk job is, and if you're good at, you can make a really good living. Also, you can learn a lot that helps you on the side, or later in life. Companies love hiring a developer with SEO skills.

Ignore the noobs that don't know what SEO means or the value behind it.

There's little question that you should take the SEO job. Stick with what you know.

That said, I would use the SEO as a foundation just as you would with helpdesk. You have to grow beyond it in some way, whether that means you use your entrepreneurial spirit to capitalize on your SEO expertise or you start getting heavier into the marketing aspects. Online marketing is a profitable business, but there's not a lot of room for the smaller players. I would transition into a firm that gives you more growth ops into the online marketing space and go from there.

an SEO job that only pays 40k? Is it just an apprentice or assistant?
How much SEO experience do you have? You should be able to get a LOT more than that.

this.

So much better growth potential in the SEO position.

IT. I was in a company that had people doing SEO, and let me tell you, it's not as stable as an IT job.

Dude...

Use "a" before all words starting with consonants.

Use "an" only before words starting with vowels.

I'm sorry, 'heil grammar'.

Don't do helpdesk. Several things happen:

- You are the first to get laid off.
- There is rarely a ladder of advancement. You get "stuck" in that level.
- You experience a complete mental breakdown as you constantly deal with end-users, and you simply stop enjoying your job, and possibly your life.

Do the SEO. While you're doing the SEO, work on high level certifications (you mentioned linux). If you plan on inserting yourself into the IT industry, do it at mid level. Don't start at the bottom.

If you know how to do web design and you're an entrepreneur at heart go with SEO no doubt. I started a company and had a million dollars in sales my second year. If I had a clue how to do SEO I'd probably be able to double that and profits would more than double. SEO is a valuable skill to have.

Is it just me and one other person or has anyone else noticed how old this thread is. The wages alone for entry-level should tell you its old.. in this economy nobody would get these offers without experience.

Good catch. I don't know how I missed this well constructed sentence that brought it back up.

I'd go with the SEO job. Help desk jobs kinda suck... the technically inept morons that you'll need to deal with will drive you nuts, and the boredom will slowly turn you into one those anti-social ultra-geek nutjobs who have 10,000+ post counts on ATOT.

Ouch... the sudden self-realization is painful
