So for a pure gaming system I have the opportunity to upgrade from a WC 3770k with 16gb of 1600 mhz DDR3 running at 4.6ghz to a Z370 mb and Core i5 9400f with 16gb of 3000mhz DDR4 for about $150. My GPU is a GTX 1080.

I don't game as much as I used to but it seems to me like a worthwhile update. I like the idea of replacing my SATA SSD with an M.2 SSD pretty soon.

I game at 1440p on a 60hz monitor. Mostly BF5 and looking at getting into MW5 when it comes out.

What do you guys think?

Exactly. The 2700x was not bad, but the 3700x blows it away.
To be 100% fair, he'd get a Z370 board, so Ryzen data would at most make him feel worse about the upgrade, which is really not bad - CPU MB 16GB RAM for $150.

Edit: ah, he could get the mobo for free anyway, I see... well, OP, don't buy a 9400f then ;p

OP, I rewrote your post as some people got lost in the details of CPU benchmarking.

As long as the information you presented is true, getting a Z370 mobo + 6 core CPU + 16GB of DDR4 3000 RAM for about $150 is a no brainer and should not be a topic of debate anywhere.

It threw me off too... but he mentions in the middle of the thread that the mobo is available for him for free anyway.

Starting to get a really bad itch...
This is the problem here, I think. Generally, you upgrade for two reasons: the current gear can't cut your workload anymore / same as hardware failure or you're afraid to lose the resale value of it as the time goes by. Any other reason is a waste of time, imo. And if you do this for fun, well... you just do it anyway "without consulting the experts". Plenty of "data" at your fingertips available 24/7, one g-click away. It's cheaper to upgrade "big" but less often, then buying cut-down products all the time. Ride a bicycle or smth, it can help.

Hold onto the motherboard and grab a used 9900k later next year cheap after the 10 series is released.
You will need a new gpu also , save money and buy both next year.
Sound advice.

No it's not. Read the thread, the used market in his country is non existent. And ignoring that very important fact, when has a high end Intel CPU ever been cheap to buy used within a gen or 2 of release? No super rare deals count, average selling price is all that matters. Steve over on hardware unboxed makes a compelling argument for why you will get juiced on that used i9 later. Historically, there is lots of precedent for that, and almost none for high Intel CPUs from a gen or 2 back being cheap.

Finally, someone that gets it. It is like reading automated scripts here anymore. Same old advice over and over, with out due consideration of the individual's actual situation. Read the thread, no used market, stuff would end up in a closet, $150 total out of pocket for a more modern platform that can take a better CPU later. It should equal no brainer, but somehow it doesn't.

At 1440p he is GPU limited

$75 for 16gb ram and $75 for a motherboard is ok but it isn't fantastic.

He also gets a CPU but it is debatable if it is better at gaming in the first place and at 1440p even more.

4c/8t and 6c/6t are likely going to be obsolete at around the same time.

if this is about gaming I would recommend maybe waiting another year, 4.6Ghz 3770 is likely mostly OK in current games, and 1 year for now the next gen console will be out and a 6c/6t CPU might not be enough.
