So first i'm a gamer. I play dead by daylight, mirrors edge, will play the new Deus Ex when it comes out. Would like to game at UHD @ 1080P.

Currently I have a i3-4130. I was going to upgrade to a i5 CPU. Should I stay in the same class and only upgrade the CPU to something like the Intel Core i5-4460?

This would save some cash, but is that worth it or should I also upgrade my mobo, upgrade to DDR4 ram and to a i5 Skylake cpu?

The video card i plan on getting will probably be either the Rx 480, or maybe nvidia 1060. Let me know someones thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest hold off till you can get i5 skylake or i7 haswell, newer games are good at utilizing cores, 4460 not enough of an upgrade, but as you can see mirrors age really likes i7 (scroll to the bottom) http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/mirror-s-edge-catalyst-test-gpu
or, you could also try xeon 1231/1240/1245 v3 on ebay it would work with your mobo and similar performance to 4770k if you are not overclocking and have a cpu fan .

Wow great link and thanks for the quick reply. Appreciate it. Think i'll go with the Intel Core i5-6500 and redo my mobo and ram too.

Skylake i5 is a great choice, it often comes close to older i7's, and if you can overclock it and get nice ddr4 kit then it can be better. Also, on jet.com if you can get 15% off coupon it would save you a bit of money.

How much would it cost you to redo your stuff for an i5 6500? Does your board support overclocking? Might want to consider a i5 4690k.

nah it's legit, it was recommended by some forum members before, made some ssd/cpu/memory purchases before and it was fine. Mainly its for cpu, some other sites may have better deals on other parts because it's rare to get discount on cpu's unless it's black friday or something.

I would upgrade to a haswell 4790k. With fast ram, skylake will be a bit faster, but not enough to justify a new motherboard and ram, IMO.

Hmm you really went bare minimum with the board there huh? :'( The good news is although your board wasn't suppose to support overclocking Intel did a weird thing and released the Pentium G3258. Once released they wanted to allow people to overclock the G3258 on cheaper boards so they allowed bios updates that let non-Z boards overclock. This had the side effect of allowing people to overclock K chips on these same cheaper boards. So you should be able to OC an i5 4670k or i5 4690k. But you'll want to keep the vcore at 1.20 or lower. If you get a good chip that will usually let you hit 4.2ghz to 4.4ghz. If you get a dud you might be limited to 3.8ghz-4ghz. Or as someone else suggested you could just get an i7 4790k and skip the overclocking. That chip has a base clock of 4ghz (turbo with all cores at 4.2).

Yea originally this computer was made to just be an HTPC with some lite gaming. It in short order has turned into more my main gaming computer.

Even so though I would get a cheaper mobo i *think*. I'm more interested in reliability being as it is a HTPC so probably wouldn't overlock. It's my cable box, my MediaCenter Movie/TV show streamer etc. So it crashing is more than just losing a puter, it's losing TV in my living room as well.

A Haswell i7 would be way cheaper than upgrading to a Skylake i5 rig, and would probably own a Skylake i5 in many circumstances because of the threads++. Not an absolute given, of course, depending on the game, but in terms of bang for the buck? Hoo-boy.

I'd upgrade the CPU and save $$$ for a beefier GPU after the early adopter taxes drop off a bit. (1070/490 class.)

Of course if money's no object then get a shiny new system.

A 4790K at $330 will demolish a 6500+MB+DDR4 for the same price. And as mentioned, you don't have to overclock to take advantage of it, since it comes clocked so high out of the box. Install it and forget it.

Do not upgrade to Skylake just to get a quad. That's bad advice.

I mean why you want to upgrade in the first place, do you feel you have significant performance problems? Because if no, you don't need to upgrade your CPU or MB and RAM, i3 is good CPU

If you want to save a little off the 4790K, consider a Xeon E3-1231V3. All of the hyper-threading, not as much money - though not as high clocks either.

Looks like I will be scoring an I5 4690K for $180 CDN, that's like $140 US.

I am still using an H81 board for now.

I'd either go 4790k and avoid platform upgrade costs. Or I'd go whole hog to get the best at 6700k knowing it will last a long time and you wont put yourself in this situation where you feel the need to upgrade again any time soon. If you don't plan on overclocking then 100% go 4790k

I'd be looking at an 4790k. That would be the most practical, cheaper, and faster than an i5-6500.

I don't think he's in a bad situation. He can go used or new i5 4670k/4690k if he's willing to OC a bit and 4790k if he's not. If he goes the i5 K Haswell route then he can reassess if he wishes when Kaby Lake comes out. But then again I like tinkering with stuff. I'm not sure I would recommend an i7 6700k new right now if he cares about resale value at all. The refreshes have significantly higher resale value. Just look at a 2600k vs a 3770k. There's about an $80 gap in used prices between the two chips.
