Hey everyone,

I have a PIII, 128 mb ram, 800 mhz computer, 30 gig hard-drive. It's an HP just incase that makes a difference. Well the reason for this post is, I dont' know if I should upgrade my system from Win ME to Win XP...I have legal licenses to XP. My room-mate is format happy, he formats every 3 weeks ( i think it's cause he has nothing better to do).

But he said i should format and put XP on, I thought that if a system is working well one shouldn't bother upgrading...what do you guys think?

I like trying out new operating systems so I'd probably go for it. But check out what features XP has compared to WinME, and decide if you really need them. If you do, go ahead and install it
But if your system is working fine and you're happy with it, why not keep it until something goes wrong?

I wouldn't put XP on it until you have more memory. Personally, I wouldn't put anything on it until it had more memory heh.

Do you play many games? ME would probably play most games smoother.

If you haven't run into anything that's causing you troubles, do you really want to go through the time of saving everything you need and starting over with XP?

You definitely would want more ram. I'd look at maxing the board. 256 is a minimum to me, 384 or 512 would be better.

I would consider WIndows 95 to be an upgrade from ME....

But you should probably either wait a few months for Half-Life 2 or Doom III and buy a whole new machine. I mean, is there anything you want to do on your PC that you can't? That's the most important question to ask when considering upgrading.

i used to think win98 was the best for games but finally came to the decision after a few months of having dual partition/boot that winxp actually gave better performance and smoother experience in most games(though some older games dont like xp). i also hate mellenium. also i think venders are giving more driver support now to xp than mil and have even given up on 98.

now if the guy constantly likes reinstalls then xp is not the way to go since you need to activate it and after a few fresh installs you end up having to call MS for permission. so unless the guy can enjoy something like driveimage2002 or similar it can get to be a hassle.

and i agree with those saying more ram . min would be 256 and 512 would be optimal.

It used to be the case that 9x was better for games than XP but now XP has really matured and there is pretty much nothing you can do in 9x that XP can't

The other thing to consider is that it is only {only } a P3 800. Yes, that's well above the requirements, I've never been happy running XP on cpu's less than a gig.

XP is dead slow on 128Mb. Stick with ME. Although I personally don't like ME it should be similar in many repects to 98se which if set up right on older hardware like yours, can be as stable as a games system can be.

If your game collection contains predominately older games then stick with ME. I've had quite a bit of trouble with XP and older games. XP is better for newer games, nothing beats win9x for older games.
