Should I wait another month or 2 before upgrading?

I was thinking of upgrading to an Intel E6850 but I was wondering if there is anything new coming out soon that will beat it and be within its price range (200-350). Or are there price drops expected to happen soon? I don't care about brand (intel vs amd). All I do is play games.

If you have the luxury to ask, then you have the time to wait.

I never buy until I absolutely need to. Well, that's not entirely true, but I try my best to control my impulses when it comes to computers and money.

I'd suggest wait until after Thanksgiving at least, because that's when they should have some good deals. I really doubt the price can do down much more. AMD is loosing pretty badly right now and it does not give Intel incentive to cut price too steeply.

After buying and upgrading computer parts for past 10 years, my experience is that on average there is not a "best" time to buy tech parts, especially computer processors. Basically you should buy when you need to buy and not before, and certainly not after you really needed it. If you don't think you missed having that processor, then you didn't really need it. Sooner or later, the CPU you buy will drop in price and be replaced by more advanced processor, so there's nothing you can do about it. Just go with the flow and spend the time to devise the strategy to how best to get mothboard/processor/memory combo so that you have room to upgrade in the future.

If you can hold out till January the mainstream 45nm C2Ds will come out, you'll be able to get a 3GHz E8400 for under $200.

If you can't wait that long, I suggest an E6750 instead of an E6850. Most games are GPU limited anyway, and the minor performance difference between the E6850 and E6750 doesn't justify the hefty jump in price IMO.

You've waited this long, go for a 9450, you'll get better cache/fsb and 4 cores

I have a similar question so I am just going to reply here.

I've got a AMD 3700+ Socket 939 Processor with a DDR2-400 memory. Is it worth upgrading? If I do then I would have to get a new mobo/mem/cpu which is a good 500$ investment(?). Also my graphics card is getting rusty (X1900XT)... oh man..I am in a pathetic situation. Please enlighten.

Also, whats up with no availability on 8800GT? Its sold out everywhere! I really want to upgrade but how can I sell my X1900XT 512MB....

When I mentioned the same socket I was responding to harpoon84's post.

Anyone have any recommendations as far what motherboard to get? Nothing to expensive, 130 or less. Some simple/moderate overclocking options, layout that isn't a pain, I'd like to have the option to do crossfire. But most importantly just one that isn't very fickle or has tons of complaints regarding stability.

I think if you need to overclock your ups you should wait a little more. There is a big possibility that price may fall and you can get low cost jumper for the mother board of your computer

Basically there's no good investment in computer parts, these things devalue faster than your new car! Like I said, only upgrade if you need to. Can you still play the games you want at the resolution and details you like? Will you be able to live with lower res or medium detail level? If no, then go buy it, otherwise just wait a little longer until you just can't bear it any longer. It's simple as that.

Be sure it has a P35 chipset, both Gigabyte and Abit have very good MB's for under $100, if you don't need SLI and other "whistles and bells".

I might get 4b of memory, would it be better to get 4x1GB or 2x2gb?

Oh and how loud is the dual core stock Hs/fan? Is it it so loud I'd be able to hear it over the fan from say the 8800gt or the HD3870?
