Should I wait for the new C400 SSD's to come out?

I built a Sandybridge PC last week, but the only thing I still need is a SSD. I was thinking of waiting until the C400 are released, but I'm not even sure when they will be released...

Should I just get a good, fast SSD right now? What would you do? What do you recommend?

I'm in the same boat (still have a few parts arriving) and I'm going to get two of the 256GB C300s. A quick google search showed me march/april release for the C400s (as a rumour), and I can't wait that long to get this build up and running.

Short answer: buy the fastest you can afford now.

This is something only you can answer.

I think for those on existing systems, this question would be a no-brainer. You're already used to your system's speed, an SSD would be the perfect boost needed to lengthen its life and give you a fresh experience. Waiting wouldn't make much sense, as the impact to you wouldn't be all that different with a faster drive (your old system would hold you back).

On the other hand, with a brand new system, I think an SSD upgrade (especially current ones) would give you a good sense of speed you're looking for - but timed so close to your fresh & fast rig, its impact may be lost amongst the 'noise' as it were. I think you may appreciate it less if you got it now. Of course that all depends on what you intend to do with it, how critical that is to you, and how willing you are parting with your cash.

For example, I've chosen to wait because I went over budget with my system, and I don't absolutely need it right now.

This is the same question I am facing, I won't be able to fully build my computer though until the end of Feb/first week of March so I'm choosing to wait. If there is a really great deal however I may jump on a C300. But I really prefer a C400/P3-256/G3 drive.

I'm in the same boat and built my 2600k Sandy setup using a Samsung F3 1TB for the system drive. I partitioned it to 120GB (leaving the rest of the drive unpartitioned)

I have 16GB of RAM and to be honest the system is already very fast for both booting and general usage (but I haven't used SSD before so I'll have the pleasure of another speed upgrade!)

I'm going to wait until the next generation SSD's come on the market in the next couple of months and simply do an HDD->SDD copy when it arrives. Intel's G2 release caused a very significant drop in prices, so I'm hoping that the G3 release will have similar effect.

I also wanted to see how big an SSD drive I really needed for Windows 7/X64 with all the applications etc on the system drive. Anything bigger than 120GB should work for me......... (from what I've read it is best to never fill them up to near capacity like you tend to do with HDD's. The current F3 system drive has around 60GB in use)

b.t.w. I'm also running with an older 9600GT graphics card (I hardly game at all) and holding out for prices to drop on the graphics card front as well since we have real competition between NVidia and AMD and prices have been steadily dropping.

Excellent advice. Looks like I'm going to play The Waiting Game.

I'm waiting it out too... got my eye on a 120 or 160gb Intel drive. A couple more months isn't going to hurt.

I really want to jump on that OCZ Vertex shell shocker today, but I told myself I would wait. So hard...

I ended up jumping on a C300 256GB drive when Newegg was offering 20% off. Maybe for my next build or an upgrade way down the line I'll look at a C500

I hope the performance is worth waiting for especially for the random read/write 4K and random read/write 4k QD=32 numbers.

Well at least you got a sale price, enjoy it. I'm waiting for Intel's 160gb & 300gb G3 SSDs as I don't need bleeding edge speed just a good boot drive that I can later down grade to software & games. When I do finally upgrade to SATA 6gig or faster.

Anyone else think there will be Thunderbolt based SSDs to compete with OCZ's HSDL drives?

The problem with Thunderbolt is that it is an external interface. I wouldn't want that drive hanging out the side of my laptop. For a desktop I suppose it could be taped to the outside. It would make a good internal interface but PCI-E does a good job already there.

Specs on the 256gb look tempting.... gotta resist the temptation to get it instead of the 128gb...

please let us know if you get it

Just got an email stating that the 128GB C400 I ordered is 'out of stock' and SuperBIIZ will be receiving a new shipment in 5 days.......

My order is placed 'on hold' till I tell them whether I wish to proceed with waiting or not.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Your SSD alignment may not be optimal, when you clone HDD image.

Anyone ???
