No, it's detrimental to the country and does not have any checks and balances.
If they don't pay taxes they should not be living here.

There not gonna be sent out so it would benfit country if they were legalised becuase then they would be able to collect tax fro, them and such.

So I say shure won't make much of a difference.

well, the some students pointed out
if this is legalized, each person is now a citizen and is treated the same. taxes, laws, same, since they move here, they have to adapt to our customs...

we had a big discussion on this in labor economics, and i came out figuring that illegal immigration is a good thing for the US. and hers why:
1. generally, people who immigrate illegally have low skills, so they can take over the no-skills jobs and allow the better educated native workers to fully use their better educations. plus, the lower cost of labor lowers the final cost of any good produced using illegal labor, making those producers more competitive.
2. illegal immigrants pay taxes! they pay sales tax on everything they buy here. and they usually aren't paid enough to have income taxes even if they were legal. immigrants that use the school system are the only real problem. the school system is set up so that a person pays in during their whole adult lives in the form of property taxes, whether they use the system or not. very few immigrants are here their whole adult lives, and lower skills immigrants usually have more children than natives and less property, so they pay in a very small amount for the usage they get.

ElFenix -
1) obviously if the people doing low-skilled jobs could get higher-skill jobs, they would. It's not as though they're choosing to work in a factory with low pay rather then be a computer programmer with "money out the wazoo" syndrome. All the immigrants are doing are taking away the only job that they could get already.
2) I can't speak for all such places, but most neighborhoods I know with high levels of immigration have shops where sales tax isn't paid. Either the shops are illegal or they skim off the actual tax they give the government, but as you said, if these immigrants are making very little anyway, the actual sales tax from their purchases is also negligable.

I wish we could open up the border with Mexico. I would support it except for the drug problem. 75% of illegal narcotics travel through Mexico to reach the US so if we would open the border it would just encourage more drug trafficking and would make it much more difficult to stop.
If we could open the border both our economies would benefit due to the increase in low cost labor and a larger population to pay taxes. For some reason most Americans think of Mexicans as uneducated peasants that live in straw huts. When in actuality most Mexicans have a decent education and would love to have the opportunity to work hard for a better life. I would go on but I know most people don't agree with my views.

Trouble is the're catholics, so they breed like rabbits.

Anyway if the border was opened it would pull wages down all along the southwest, so it would be political suicide, even though the business lobby would love it.

No. We don't want the Canadians coming down here and taking our jobs.
Not only should it not be legalized, we should improve our borders. Just a fence isn't enough. We need two electrified fences with a landmined buffer zone in between, and watchtowers with gunners. Borders should be impermeable. If someone wants to come here, they should get in line at the US embassy, just like everyone else.

This "illegal immigrant" thing was a quasi-major thing at campus. Some liberal pro-mexican student group decided to put white crosses in front of out union to signify the deaths of many mexicans dying while trying to cross the border. I do pity these people trying to get to a better life, but it doesnt excuse the fact that it was their fault for trying to cross the border in the first place. Some people say that you should open up the borders, but doing that causes many problems. Yes, many of the immigrants want to come here and work for a better life, but what happens when they learn about welfare? Look at some of our own citizens today. They breed like rabbits just to get more welfare checks from the government. Do you think these immigrants will work as hard in low-paying jobs when they can get the same amount of money through the government doing nothing? I dont think so.

The current immigration policy is fine. Quotas should be increased though. And it isn't just Mexicans who emmigrate here. Think of all the asians, europeans, arabs, africans, and latin americans (oh, and those pesky canucks! ) who come to these shores every year. If we raised the quota, but also adjusted our policy to enforce some sort of aclimation program, we could greatly reduce "culture-shock" for both the current citizens and the immigrants, and greatly reduce and/or eliminate the illegal immigration problem.

Oh, "Nativisim" and the US are a special issue with me. We are all in the great melting pot of the world. The US is the most integrated and diverse society on Earth, bar none. For those of you who were lucky enough to have been born here, try not to be so xenophobic. From immigration does the United States receive some of its best minds, and some of the most patriotic people. My experience has shown me that a naturalized citizen takes the US more seriously than does someone who was just born here. Hell, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was a Polish immigrant I believe (I can't quote for sure what his nationality was). Can't get much more patriotic than that.

Count your blessings. In many places of this world, people are born with few. To many impoverished and persecuted people in the world, the US still shines as the land of opportunity. It is the people who were born here who have gotten lazy, and take it for granted. The fact that so many people want to come here is a good thing.

My $.02. Consider yourself enlightened.

Hell no. I didn't spend 6 years waiting to finally get my citizenship, while some people can just enter the country illegaly and be made citizens without any effort.

And I know that I'm gonna get flamed for this - but if you move to this country, at least make the effort to learn the language. I don't have a problem if you dont' know it when you come here, but for god's sake, pick some up after living here for years.
I feel that I can say this because although we had a little bit of English knowledge, both my mother and I learned to speak English in order to live in this society.

Amen toolgirl!
When I lived in Colorado, they tried to pass a law that made Spanish the "official" language of Colorado. That meant that all public signs (road signs etc.) would have Spanish first and English second. A lot of people were very upset because they felt that it was America and English should remain the "official" language of the state.

I didnt vote for bush, but this is one thing that i admire about him. hes pretty soft on illegal immigration. Thats one reason that he recieved a decent percentage of the Hispanic vote in Texas.

I live in Texas i know.
