Should slaves have forgiven their masters...

For giving them food and shelter?

A North Carolina man is all over online media tonight after arguing at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland Friday that slavery gave "shelter and food" to slaves.

The statements by Scott Terry of NC were made during a CPAC panel session aimed at improving conservatives' outreach among minority voters.

According to ThinkProgress, a left-wing blog that was the first to report the flap, Terry asked African American conservative presenter K. Carl Smith whether Republicans could endorse racial separatism.

"It seems to me that you're reaching out to voters that might fit the program you're speaking of at the expense of young white Southern males like myself," Terry tells Smith in the video provided by ThinkProgress.

"I feel like my people - my demographic, people like myself, are being systematically disenfranchised," Terry says.

Smith answers Terry's question by telling him that Frederick Douglass wrote a letter to his former master "and said to him I forgive you for all the things you did to me."

"For giving him shelter and food?" Terry asks Smith.

Some in the audience laugh. Others cheer and clap.

According to ThinkProgress:

After the exchange, Terry muttered under his breath, “why can’t we just have segregation?” noting the Constitution’s protections for freedom of association.

<snip>

When asked by ThinkProgress if he’d accept a society where African-Americans were permanently subservient to whites, he said “I’d be fine with that.” He also claimed that African-Americans “should be allowed to vote in Africa,” and that “all the Tea Parties” were concerned with the same racial problems that he was.

At one point, a woman challenged him on the Republican Party’s roots, to which Terry responded, “I didn’t know the legacy of the Republican Party included women correcting men in public.”

He claimed to be a direct descendent of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Smith, the presenter, released a statement to TPM late Friday saying that despite "some racially insensitive comments," Terry later came to understand Smith's point, and the two "left as friends."

Smith also said an African-American reporter caused even more disruption at the panel when she "rudely interrupted" him with questions.

The story caught fire on left-leaning sites, but quickly reached mainstream outlets like Gawker and Wonkette.

Oh you just had to be from NC didn't you? Way to represent my oppressed brother. And here's to all who cheered you on. White power.

Forgiveness is not about the person you are forgiving, but about freeing yourself from the desire to take revenge.

Hold on somebody is racist.. Say it ain't so. Racist are on both sides of the fence.

Sure his comments were retarded, hell beyond retarded. But this is a no name loser, so why has it "caught fire".

The best part was that this was at a CPAC panel on how to deal with those mean old liberals calling you racist (because obviously they are so so not racist).

Hint: when your convention can't have a panel on how not to be considered racist without someone acting as an apologist for slavery and HAVING PEOPLE CHEER IT, your group is probably pretty fucking racist.

Oh but remember they just have policy differences with Obama and the media is mean.

Not that they'll get it. "I'm not a Jim Crow racist, so dem libruls must just be nasty name callin' when they call me racist."

Sorry, conservatards, it ain't even these guys we're talking about when we call you racist. We're not talking about your beliefs, we're talking about your system, and the fact is that unfiltered self-promotion when your identity isn't inclusive leads to the construction of a power structure that isn't inclusive. The Republican party is popular with these racists because when you make it into the party to promote your White Christian self it is exactly the tool for them to promote their White Christian selves.

Hold on somebody is racist.. Say it ain't so. Racist are on both sides of the fence.

No, there aren't. There are conservatives who vote liberal, but there aren't conservatives who are liberal.

The liberal system doesn't hand racists authority, while the conservative system is based on acting out of one's first impulse of what one wants (a thought that ain't gonna be inclusive -- that takes a second, third, and fourth thought), which makes exclusionist thinking the epitome of conservative thought.
The white supremacists above are conservatives, while a racist who votes liberal is also a conservative who just isn't in a place where voting conservative promotes himself. He's not a liberal -- liberals are against him getting the power to effect his conservatism, just as we are against the above having the power to effect theirs.

Liberalism is bigger that self-centeredness. Conservatism is self-centeredness.

Now he's starting a fight with women in addition to Africans.

Its easy to hate on the white guy in this scenario, as of course white people killed the indians, enslaved africans, stole land from everyone etc etc [let the guilt just flow!]...But at the same time there is the NAACP out there, and folks such as Al sharpton and Jesse Jackson who regularly make racially charged attacks against white people or just go along with lies about white people [Al sharpton and his long resume of falsely accusing white men of raping black women come to mind here].

Rarely do you see those jackasses attacked [or the NAACP], if everything was fair they would be taken to task on being race baiters but they never are.

*Note I dont agree with the white guy in the story on 90% of his comments, but I do think the media guards the "protected groups", so I agree that there is bias from the media. A white guy who attacks a black man [or 17 yr old boy] will make headlines but the reverse most likely wont.

I know, why don't we tie this guy up and lash him like they did to slaves who tried to flee their bondage back then? Then we can see how grateful he is. The slaves were so grateful for the food and shelter that they fled their captors at risk of starvation and exposure. How was this guy not laughed out of the building when he said this?

Ooooooh, North Carolina....say no more.

I have been laughing since I read about this. The funny thing is the GOP can not or will not step away from Mr Terry or offend him. He reflects a very active wing of their party.

How successful was this breakout session? Did it give the GOP an answer to anyone who calls them racist?

Youtube is the Democrats' friend.

Concerning the OP, should exslaves forgive their past owners? Are there any exslaves still alive?
