Should the Lakers trade Shaq ?

regardless of whether the lakers win or not (perhaps better if they do win again this year) shaq is 30.
the lakers have won 2 championships, 2 more than they would have won without him, in all likelihood.
but now is when he is most valueable, at the height of his powers. he isn't going to get younger and
the nba rules committee isn't going to rescind their introduction of the zone defense.

i'm not sure about his player rights; as a 5 and 10 guy he has final approval and can force numerous
stipulations on his trade. this year was his 10th in the league and he just finished his 6th with the
lakers. the lakers could package o'neal, fisher, fox, and there first round pick this year to, say,
indiana for their 1st round pick this year, jermaine o'neal, tinsley, and jonathan bender. indiana
is looking to bring back reggie miller for another year but only if they can restructure his contract,
meaning he must accept less, freeing more cap room for them to sign other players. whatcha think ?

the lakers would be adding jermaine o'neal at 5 (argueably the best young center in the league),
bender at the 3, and a true point guard in tinsley, plus the overall 14th pick.

pacers would start shaq at 5, artest at 3, harrington at 4, reggie miller at 2, and fisher at 1. fox,
miller, crozier, and foster off the bench, and the 27th overall pick, plus cap room to sign a quality
free agent or 2.

Thats nuts. Shaq is so dominant that he could lose most of his skills and still be the best center in the league. And its an evolving process too. As he loses a step or two, he begins to develop a 10-15 ft. jumper..and free-throw shooting will improve gradually.

I don't think he can be traded because of the salary cap. Because of the Larry Bird exception, the Lakers were able to resign him to a 3 year 90 million dollar contract. I think he would have to take the league maximum if he were traded, or else the other team would have to try to fit that 30 million a year in their cap, which isn't going to happen either.

but why ? ? ?

-jermain o'neal will be 25 when next season starts (2002: 19.0 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 2.31 blks.)
-jonathan bender has major potential. he can start for the lakers. he's only 21. imagine a 7 foot small/power forward !
-tinsley just turned 22. 2002 rookie campaign: 8.1 assists and 9.8 points. imagine his numbers next year running with kobe ?
-kobe turns 24 on august 23rd.
-and the 14th overal pick in this years draft !!!
-plus all that salary cap room which would be freed up.

I don't know much about the NBA, I tend to stop following basketball by the beginning of April, but breaking up a two time defending champ is something that even a complete NBA moron wouldn't do.

There's some big time misunderstanding of the way the NBA's collective bargaining agreement works here.

LMAO.
I wouldn't trade O'neal by himself for those guys.
1st round pick - rookie. Enough said.
O'neal - good player, not dominant, just a kid. Lots of mental errors and inconsistency.
Tinsley - turnovers up the wazoo.
Bender - still unproven high school pick.

SHAQ: most dominant player ever, unbeatable inside game, solidifying defense, tons of playoff experience, known leader, Lakers' offense runs through him.

Oh yeah, great trade.

Plenty of reasons why you don't trade shaq, just a few:

1)You do not trade your best player. Shaq is simply the most dominant force in the NBA, you don't give that up.
2)Shaq would work to make the Lakers his personal beotches if he was ever traded, and he'd probably be able to do it.
3)He's Shaquille O'Neal. 7'1" 360 pounds, one of the NBA's 50 greatest of all time. 2000 league MVP, 2 time Finals MVP.
4)It's fvcking insanity to trade Shaquille O'Neal
5)Mitch Kupchak and Jerry Buss would be shot if they traded Shaquille O'neal
6)Did I mention this is Shaq we're talking about?
7)Even if there was a chance that the Lakers would want to trade him, it would be almost impossible anyway.

Minnesota trades: SF Kevin Garnett (21.2 ppg, 12.1 rpg, 5.2 apg in 39.2 minutes)
C Marc Jackson (4.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 0.4 apg in 12.7 minutes)
SG Anthony Peeler (9.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.2 apg in 25.1 minutes)
Minnesota receives: PG Derek Fisher (11.2 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.6 apg in 28.2 minutes)
C Shaquille O'neal (27.2 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 3.0 apg in 36.2 minutes)
PF Robert Horry (6.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.9 apg in 26.4 minutes)
Change in team outlook: +10.2 ppg, +0.8 rpg, and +0.7 apg.

L.A. Lakers trades: PG Derek Fisher (11.2 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.6 apg in 28.2 minutes)
C Shaquille O'neal (27.2 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 3.0 apg in 36.2 minutes)
PF Robert Horry (6.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.9 apg in 26.4 minutes)
L.A. Lakers receives: SF Kevin Garnett (21.2 ppg, 12.1 rpg, 5.2 apg in 81 games)
C Marc Jackson (4.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 0.4 apg in 39 games)
SG Anthony Peeler (9.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.2 apg in 82 games)
Change in team outlook: -10.2 ppg, -0.8 rpg, and -0.7 apg.

TRADE ACCEPTED

Due to Minnesota and L.A. Lakers being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Minnesota and L.A. Lakers had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

I think that'd be a pretty good trade for LA. Starting lineup would go Jackson, Garnett, Fox, Kobe, whoever (draft Dickau or Juan Dixon with your first round pick to play the point, although point isn't really necessary in the triangle. Peeler could do the job.)

Or they could just make it easier and start calling the Lakers the Timberwolves and the Timberwolves the Lakers.

Ladies and Gentlmen, let's have a round of applause for Jerry Krause and Jerry Reinsdorf. I'm glad they did it when they did though, or else the Lakers wouldn't have gotten Phil.

Yes. He is the worst thing that happened to Lakers in terms of center position player.
Most of you are probably too young to remember Lewis Alcindor to understand what I am trying to say.

Well, I am looking forward to seeing that new Chinesse dude destroying O'Neal.
