Should we delay the June 12th rollout of DTV?

Just convert it already, if you're too much of a dipsh*t to buy a 20$ converter box then you will have to go without TV for a couple days.

However, if you do request one now, you will not have it in time for the analog shut-off (which is what June 12th is, not really a DTV-rollout date). Hopefully you're not depending on that, in which case I'd ask why you've been waiting so long!

I hate how cable companies charge extra $ per month to get standard cable channels in HD. You're already paying lots of money (~$60/mo) for even standard cable (of the ~50 channel variety). Do they really need to milk you for even more?

What pisses me off more is when channels do "widescreen" by windowboxing the image. Makes it look like shit. That way everyone gets black bars - old TVs just get ones on top and bottom, while newer widescreen TVs get huge bars on all four sides!

I don't understand why this is so complicated. For a month, broadcast on the analog channels nothing but a 5 minute loop explaining the transition and what they need to do.

Emergency Broadcast System is SO 80s. It's now the EAS.

I don't even understand this whole thing. Why not keep it the way it is? People who want DTV can go ahead and pay for it and get it, those who want to stick with regular TV can also do it. Everyone wins. I don't watch much TV so to me it's not the end of the world. Also it's only like 1$ extra to upgrade to digital cable anyway.

I wonder if this even affects Canada though. I've heard of the "switch" but hardly anything. All I heard is something about those who are on regular cable needing to get a converter box or something.

analog used a frequency that could be sold of other purposes I think?

I doubt it will do anything in Canada because well I think I would get like CBC and 3 other channels through bunny ears...I doubt anyone will miss it

In the US, the FCC owns the EM spectrum just like we own the air above us and allocates frequencies for use. This is to ensure everything works properly and doesn't interfere with another otherwise you have EM anarchy.

This is of course a pretty kind and gentle FCC and allocates public and private use frequencies for just about everything and if you want a band you can go get it.

The huge and wide bands for broadcast TV at the time was a good idea but has since been rendered obsolete given digital transmission. The FCC wants it back so it could be used for better purposes. They always owned it anyway.

To put it simply, Canada doesn't matter as the US doesn't control your use of those frequencies but the entire world coordinates their use of it, thanks the the United States of America. This is why your wi-fi card and cell phone will work anywhere in the world.
