Shouldn't motherboard power connectors be shifted 90 degrees?

Every motherboard I've ever worked with has the 24 pin connector running perpendicular to the plane of the board itself. Wouldn't it be better for cable management to have it run parallel? These connectors are typically on the edge anyway.

EDIT:

Apparently some companies do it correctly.

it will be nice but some small cases will have a hard rime to deal with the cables

While I haven't heard that this is the reason I would think that it might have something to do with the stress of plugging in the connection. I have seen a large number of laptops that have the power connection broken simply by picking it up in the front and putting pressure on the plug in in the back and ends up braking the soldered connection on the board. So if it is turned 90° you dont have the strenght of the board to help backstop the force needed to plug in you only have the strength of the solder to hold it.

How do you say mate. That point is moot.

PPL should learn to handle the harware and then enjoy yep.

Strangely, it's in small cases where I would find it most useful. Those damn 24pin cables take up alot of space on an itx board, especially with the cable shooting straight up before you can bend it.

The real problem isn't the connector on the motherboard but the one on the cable itself. The cable is generally pretty rigid so it doesn't bend much and may be hard to cram into some nook in the case. I think if the cable had a 90 degree angle connector it would sit better to the motherboard.

The 24 pin ATX connector is quite high pressure to get in. I suspect its done the way it is so that the connection isn't broken by the force of pushing it on. Other connectors are a lot easier to get on (SATA, USB etc) as the pins are smaller and the connector has less touch points. On every build I have done in the last 5 years I would certainly have benefitted from a side facing connector, it might even have saved me buying an extension for one board but overall its not a big deal.

Most PC parts are designed with maximum compatibility in mind; special cable and connector placements and designs take away from that.

But I agree that the 90° alignment shown above would be nice in many cases (pun alert). It would also work well with a custom designed power cable bundle that has the wires exiting the connector at 90° shooting up or down, depending on PSU location.

But that is the problem, these manufacturers have no idea what the orientation of your parts are, and are probably afraid to offer too many custom options because idiots would complain when they don't fit.

Never going to happen. It would make it incompatible with a very large number of small cases, gaming cases sure no issue they have the length to fit longer GPU's anyways so this would be a non issue.

But for most smaller cases there simply is not enough room there for the 6" of ATX cable that is very rigid to come out of that 90 degree socket and still fit in the case.

My girlfriends case for example is a perfect example of a case that this would not be compatible with and its even a full size ATX Antec case from there quiet series.

To bad EVGA Doesn't address other issue's besides an angled main connector! Now if they could apply that to there customer service or there over priced warranty services they might sell some motherboards.......
That's why there a NITCH company, sucking on the unknowing masses of computer people who gaze in awwwwww

You wanna see an Asus motherboard with this? I'll hook you up! Not like its rocket science, they took the power connectors for a GPU and used them on the MB.

If they'd encapsulated the entire connnector in plastic for a square back-edge, it'd be easier to insert the cables in a 'pinching' motion to squeeze it together. But it's still difficult to remove. Cases cram so much into that area, refusing to allocate an extra inch in depth to clear drive cages - either above the motherboards or away from them.

But I also have a complaint about those SATA 'pedestals' that are made for only latchless connectors when so many cable-makers only supply latched-cables. (I'm never sure why - when I take computers out into the yard to sling around in voodoo rituals, I hardly ever hang onto SATA cables - honest, I really don't NEED them latched!)

Glad you brought this to my attention, as I didn't know some motherboards did this.

I have one case where that right angle connector might work, but it would require me to plug the cable in before installing the motherboard, as there is hardly any room next to the HDD cage. The cable would then be in the way of my HDD's, but I could make it work.

In my other case, that would not fit at all and would have to be returned. There is about 10mm between the right side of the motherboard and the removable cage supports. No room for the plug, let alone the cable.
