It's normal practice a home owner is required to shovel the sidewalk in front of his property. I've never heard of anything different anywhere in Canada.

Do you know the costs of snow clearing? It's extremely expensive. Your taxes would have to go way up to cover all the sidewalks too.

90% of the time I shovel my sidewalk but my next door neighbor who has a corner house does not... so what's the point if I do it and then they don't? Whoever is walking is going to be walking on the cleared street rather than the sidewalk anyway because it's hit or miss cleared sidewalks. Suburbia = few walkers.

Theres a lot about shoveling etiquette which I learned in Minnesota and has not yet been taught here in Virginia. At least one person had the decency to ask.

Also, little tip for the rest of you: Your minivan was not designed to drive on ice. And its very unlikely you had the good sense to purchase high quality snow tires with proper grip.

Yeah, see, it works both ways. And for the record, as a Canadian I've encountered my fair share of snow. Also, I used to shovel the drive ways and sidewalks of most of my street, just because I could. I was simply saying that it should not be a legal obligation.

Where I'm from, we have little plows that care care of all the sidewalks. It's one guy for a fairly large area. I think, with the taxes I pay, I deserve that service.

And you imply that they need to justify tax hikes, anyway.

I've never heard of home owners being responsible for the side walk. Just make sure you don't dump snow in it. Or if you hire someone with a plow or tractor to clear your driveway and there are two snow banks on both sides of your driveway extending into the sidewalk, you should go clear those. You pay taxes for a reason, part of those should be budgeted towards street and sidewalk plowing. The only part of the sidewalk I would shovel is the part directly in front of your driveway and that's just so you can actually get in your driveway.

Also if you can use a push broom to shovel, then why bother? lol.

Well unlike you, I'd rather pay less taxes and shovel my own sidewalk. Difference of opinion though I guess. Either way you are legally required to have the sidewalks shoveled. You are just going about it in a different way.

Now that depends completely on how the law was enacted doesn't it? If people voted for it to be this way - shouldn't it be that way? Thats how it came about in my area. Or maybe you don't care what the majority of people vote for?

That's obviously a different scenario, in which I would agree that it would be the individuals obligation to maintain the property.

We don't shovel shit. The city doesn't care about our part of town, since it is just all college students. We pay property taxes unknowingly through rent, but don't get shit all in return.

It gets so bad that we all have to walk on the main road because the sidewalks are not plowed. Then the cars get all antsy and beloved patriot, but we all just ignore them and walk on the road. If they want to blame someone, blame the city for not taking care of our sidewalks and roads.

In my parents city there is a mini-sidewalk plow that goes around and cleans sidewalks. I have seen some here where I live, but they don't use them in our neighbourhood. Again, because we are all students the city doesn't care.

Sidewalks, in most areas, are the legal responsibility of the homeowner to keep clear from snow or ice. Police can cite you for note clearing it. We have a Snapper 21 inch snow thrower, so two passes, 1 up the walk and 1 back clears a nice wide path. Sidewalks are not much more than 24 inches wide around here.
