Shoveling Etiquette

I saw some awesome dude on a bike look at the sidewalk and decide not to go for it. I would've loved to see him take a spill into the snowbanks on either side.

That's why we ride in the street. I had a blast passing cars in morning rush hour on my way to class today! :biggrin:

Also, comparing your sidewalk to the cities is absurd. You've probably got a lot, maybe 2 if you're on the corner, to deal with. Your city likely has miles to clear. Big difference.

Maybe this is just an American perspective, but we tend not to want to see our uniformed servicemen doing things like this. Yeah, we might call in the guard after an extraordinary event like Katrina, since these guys are trained better than anyone to go into the shit and operate, but shoveling snow?

Kind of a slap in the face in light of all of the hard work and training they go through, isn't it?

Sure beats going to Iraq and dying over a lie.

I didn't read the whole thread but specifics here are:

You are required to shovel your sidewalk on private property within 48hrs of snowfall. Sidewalk must be cleared edge to edge to allow for disabled people.

The city will fine you if it isn't done and there is an 800 number to call to report people. I don't have a sidewalk.

This particular rider was a dumbass, and not an awesome dude, specifically because he didn't want to ride in the street. I have no problem with cyclists, but I also see that cyclists want the rights of both cars and pedestrians when in the street. That's fine, I'm happy to share the road. But stay off the damn sidewalk.

I did that a few times back when I lived in a city... my general response was "so what?"

pissed me off when people would attempt to stake claims on parking spaces by putting their garbage cans in the middle of the street... I had no problem moving them back onto the curb even if I wasn't parking there.
