I can't take it anymore! I'm dual booting which means I'm constantly restarting Vista, which means I'm constantly having to give permission to User Account Control for critical startup applications to start.

I know, I know UAC is great protection from spyware and trojans. You know what? It's not worth it! Bye bye UAC and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out of my "Windows Vista Experience."

4 vista machines, all have UAC on, all the time. I hardly see UAC prompts anymore now that my machines are set up properly.

Wonderful. Do you, by chance, run any of the following applications on start up?:

Rivatuner
Seagate Free Agent
Nvidia Monitor

If so, I'd sure like to know how I can "set up my machine properly" in order to avoid the UAC prompts.

Oh, I see, it's the startup applications fault, not Vista's fault that you can't whitelist a trusted application even as an administrator.

How about this, I wouldn't use any third-party startup applications if Vista had:

1) Built-in hardware monitoring
2) Video card fan control
3) Decent backup software

Then I could turn UAC control back on and the bunnies and ponies could come out to play under rainbows and gumdrops.

Contact Riva, Seagate, and nVidia and tell them to fix their crapware.

They don't have a whitelist because they don't want to give a crutch to companies that write sucky software. I would happier if they would take away the option to disable UAC, then maybe I wouldn't get so much spam from the botnet using your computer.

Nice bias thread. You have a couple apps that need to be updated for Vista. Almsot every box here at home is on Vista now (at least 6 of em at this point). And, get this, I'm RARELY shown a UAC prompt. At most I now average one a day and it's for things I shoul be prompted for like regedit.

So, go complain to the authors of the shareware your using. Your blaming the wrong thing here.

For the record, it's basically universally on. The same subset of users who thing they know better and turn off system restore are the same users that turn off UAC. Your disliking it aside, thats where things actually are today.

I turned it off. When something is designed as "one size fits all", it causes problems. UAC is not a bad idea, it's just that there needs to be a way to make exceptions for software that I ok. Let me decide, I don't need or want a computer "nanny."

btw, i read a long time ago that microsoft didnt want a user-configurable whitelist on the UAC for fear that malicious code could simply add itself to the list. then all you goats would be crying that microsoft software isnt secure.

Had to turn it off.

I don't like doing it, but it's amongst the first things i do upon install, as it's simply too annoying.

Try an experiment (since I presume you've had your rig up for bit now). Re-enable it and post your experiences. We all agree you see it a bit when first configuring a machine, but once setup you'll probably rarely run into it (and when you do, its probably for a reason)

I would, except the only app i can use in x64 for OCing & controlling fan speed on my 8800 GTX is Rivatuner, & we already know how well that works

Also, to be honest, i'm not too worried about security.

I basically never ran virus protection on XP, & only occasionally ran a spyware checker.

Considering how much better Vista is, i feel even better about my lack of security, but even still, i wouldn't suggest disabling UAC to anyone.

My own choices don't necessarily reflect my views on things for the general user
