I was in the open beta the last couple months, too. Yes, both still towns, but you are thinking of arwic, which is now a pit with high level shadows in it, right next to a walled city, which is now arwic. Matty robes were re-introduced. I was on FF for a bit, if you ever get interested in playing again, talk to wind talker if she is still around, she has a great allegiance on FF.
Yes, it is all foci (replacing a pack for each school you use) and prismatic tapers and scarabs now.

I use icons to open stuff, like programs and whatnot. I find it handy.

I agree with you though it looks like we're in a minority. The irony about my obsession with keeping the pc desktop clean is that in all other things I'm not particularly neat.

I dont have icons on my desktop but really the clutter makes very little difference. I dont see my desktop 99% of the time. I can understand how people would rather just have lots of icons on the dekstop for convenience sake
