Showering at school

We were forced to shower after the gym in high school. There were always a handful of people who refused to shower and would be given detention by the hardass P.E. coaches - dunno if that would still fly today with all the possible litigation - but I also don't know why guys with morning P.E. would want to go back class to class sweaty for another 6 periods.

I went to 2 different high schools, 1 showered and the other didn't. The one that did had us running the mile every week, the other did it twice a year. Some schools actually do athletic things in physical education, others just play pickleball.

I had 'gym' second period. Our schedules were such that we got two electives each semester and if you were on a sports team one of those would be used by 'gym' first or second period which was used for extra conditioning

You better believe we were sweaty after that class and pretty much everyone showered to avoid smelling for the rest of the day

This. I played hockey and yeah we never showered or groped each other. You go home, have a nice hot bath, maybe a facial, do your nails, then go shopping.

In middle school the locker room had showers but we were not allowed to use them after gym class. I vaguely remember being told they were for the sports teams, but I wasn't on those so who knows if they were ever used. In my high school, which was renovated about 1996, the locker room had one, private shower, so forget about making it mandatory. Its use, however, was permitted and it was not uncommon for one or two people to quickly rinse off after class.

I'm sure all the teachers would prefer kids to shower, but clearly school policy in my area has changed to prevent kids from showering communally. I assume this has something to do with the rise of political correctness and the litigious nature of American culture. Also, smelly kids are a small price to pay in an age where most kids have camera phones and unfettered internet access. Forty years ago little Ricky might have been teased or even tormented, but today it could easily result in the propagation of CP.

When I was in grade school and in high school, showering after PE was mandatory...not just suggested. If the coach caught you trying to sneak out w/o showering, the next day, you were going to spend the entire class running laps. (at a minimum...this was also in the days when teachers were allowed to give hacks)

Just curious:

Those that HAD to shower after gym/PE/athletics, how many class periods did you have that day, and how much time were you given?

The reason why I ask this, is because when I started HS in 2001, we had 4 periods a day (90 min classes), and that would presumably give you plenty of time to shower (I wouldn't know, I had athletics in the last period and after school).

After 2002, because of more "rigorous" state testing, our school district switched to a 7 period day with 50 min classes. If you had 5 minutes to shower and get dressed under this format, that would be a LOT.

Are cell-phones even allowed at school? Pagers were the big thing when I was in HS and if they even caught you with one in the parking lot as school was getting out they would confiscate it.

We definitely had showers in middle-school as well. I remember the coach/pe instructor literally picking up one kid by the hair and walking him 10 feet into the showers. You'd never get away with that today lol.

I never took gym since I was in Athletics. However I wonder now if the time is so condensed that there are not given any time to shower after gym class, just enough time to change back into school clothers and go to the next class.

thats the way it was at my HS. We had like 5 minutes to just get changed before going to the next class. no time to shower.

The showers at my high school didn't look like they had been cleaned since the school was built. Nobody showered in there. We all had gym clothes to change into and aftergym changed back into our street clothes.

At my high school, you got teased and ridiculed if you didn't shower after gym. Playing football and track I would shower 2-3 times a day at school.

This is how I remember it. Kids who didn't shower after gym were labeled as scuzzballs and everybody made fun of them.

Nobody showered after gym when I was in HS. They didn't really give enough time and there weren't enough showers in a locker room in which two 30-person gym classes were using. Plus, gym didn't leave you very sweaty and I had it later in the day.

The girls had cubicles but the guys had a row of shower heads. Other gyms had a room and show heads around it. The flashier gyms I've been to had cubicles

We had like 5 minutes to change and get on to the next class. Even if there was time though, nobody would have showered. Looking back, its ridiculous. I cant imagine walking around in regular clothes after sweating and playing sports.

I was always in the team sports and highly competitive gym classes with all of the other athletes.

I can rememeber the first week of High School. I was showering and after I had finished showering the PE Instructor called me into his office and requested that I not shower ever again!
