Anyone audiophiles out there compared these to the Etymotic ER-4Ps or ER-6s? How about with any of the Grados or Sennheiser HD-580/600s? I know earbud vs. open-air isn't fair and the Senns and 4Ps are a lot more expensive, but just to get an idea of relative sound quality...

kimchee, i've tried the ety 4ps', grado's 60/80/125, allessandro, and senn 580's.

etys' are too bright, lack of bass. but very clear. not comfortable for me.
senn 580's were comfortable. good sound, better with amp. a little on the expensive side unless u get a deal. a must have if you have multiple headphones
grados and allessandro all sound really good in my opinion amped and unamped. they get a little uncomfortable after many hours..but best bang for the buck i would say.
i haven't tried any shures yet, but i hear the shure5c's have good bass compared to ety's.

if i were to only have one pair i'd go for the Alessandro MS1's. decent price and excellent sound. hope that helps.

is there anywhere where you can get a demo of these? I never thought i would spend $100+ on headphones but if they sound that much better then i would consider it.

I own a pair of E1's and E2c's. I have used E5's (custom molded to my brother's ears .. close enough to mine).

The E3's AFAIK are a step up from the E2's and the E2's sound fantastic. Great range, very full sound. The only thing that's a big different with them is that they use foam surrounds, like ear plugs. You roll them up and stick 'em in your ears. It's a bit different at first. It almost completely blocks all external sound. It does seem to amplify bodily sounds like swallowing, though.

Overall, great headphones. I recommend them for use when working in a noisy environment and exercising. That's what I use mine for. I don't use them at the office because it's a bit of a pain to have to pull them out when someone has a question, then roll 'em up and put them back in my ears.

The E3Cs have the option to use foam surrounds, but they also come with a variety of plastic surrounds. There are 3 sizes of soft gray surrounds, and 3 sizes of harder clear surrounds, in addition to the foamies.

I have my set of E3Cs on right now (fed by my iPOD), and I absolutely love them. They are comfortable, have tremendious range for earbuds (bass can never be as good as over-ear cans though), and do a great job of blocking out sound. Whenever I have them on, I have to have co-workers let me know when my phone is ringing! The best thing about the sound isolation is that you don't have to crank the volume way up to hear good sound. I think it's actually easier on your ears using this type of earbud. My iPOD volume is only at about 25%, and I can hear just as good as when I have my Sennheiser HD212's at almost 50% volume.

I paid $160 for these a few months back, and I wouldn't hesitate to pay that much again. This is a great price for these buds!

I own a pair of E3c's and Grado SR-80's and I like the E3c's so much that I am considering selling the Grados.
The E3c includes these very soft rubber surrounds which do a great job of blocking out ambient noise are are at the same time very comfortable. So comfortable I can leave them in my ears for 7-8 hours at a time w/ no problem.

As for sound quality, they sound great but are very different from my Grados. The only people these headphones wouldn't satisfy are those people who KNOW they need the E5c's to be happy because their ears are that discerning.

Got them today. AWESOME quality from those tiny drivers, it's incredible! The foam connector things do a great job of sealing off ambient noise.

i listened to the shures and didnt think they were that good

if u want a good portable set of headphones, i recommend the sennheiser px100s. they're about $35-40 but sound really good for that price.

i also have the grado 60's which have really good bass response but are too big for portable use. also they are uncomfortable after a long time.

Wow, I remember paying $99 for my e2s when they first came out. Best earphones I've ever owned. Shure equipment rules.
