It is 6ºF here in the Flowery Branch, GA neck of the woods. Wind chill about -7ºF. The wife and I usually set the thermostat to 59ºF overnight during Winter, but dang the furnace is working too good. I had to go adjust the thermostat to 55ºF to get it to shut off. Yankee thrift!

Sitting here in a t-shirt and shorts. Yankee style! OK< admittedly I'm from Rhode Island, but it is amusing watching these southerns shiver in this weather. Just finished my mug of ice coffee and now I am drinking ice water.

Mmm.

I don't get it... your furnace wouldn't shut off at 59 so you set it to 55 to stop it from running? What kind of piss poor insulation do you have?

OP is bragging about how awesome at dealing with the cold he is. he normally sets his thermostat to 59 because it probably rarely gets that low and never turns on. but since its so cold it actually kicked on, and he is such a manly man, he had to adjust it lower to 55 so it would stay off.

grats op. you sure are awesome at being super chill.

Current outdoor temperature: -10, with a windchill of negative a lot. Current indoor temperature in these two rooms: 80+. I'm not too worried about shutting off the "furnace" - did so the other day to clean it. I have room to crank it up a little bit more.

I'm not sure how ya'll can handle what's going on in the Midwest...I think it got down to like 22F early this morning. I felt like I was going to die on my way into work.

Then again, you guys probably know how to dress appropriately for that climate :hmm:.

its not like we are out playing in it.

Today was pretty brutal when I went to start up my car, plus I had to drag the trash can through a couple feet a snow to get it by the curb, so I bundled up a bit. I'm wearing a fleece, normal jeans, normal socks but today I did opt for boots. Most days I still wear my slip ons.

I think what would help you is planning ahead a bit. On mornings like this I start up my car at least 20 minutes before I plan to leave. I want it nice and toasty in there when I get in. If you just jump in and take off you are going to freeze your ass off. Also, keep the ends of yourself warm. If your head, feet and hands are warm, the rest of you will be too.

heavy coat w/hood + gloves + balaclava + insulated shoes

The ice growing on the INSIDE of my double pane windows is a touch disconcerting though. The metal frames have gotten so cold soaked.

OP is a wimp. My HVAC was off completely.

Might have something to do with the power being out though.

We are hardy but even we can't unfreeze jet fuel in the hydrant systems that feed the terminals by intestinal fortitude alone. They're refueling most planes by tanker truck around here and there are only so many trucks.

55f is too cold for us and we're in SD. We set the thermostat at ~73. Temp doesn't seem to matter, whatever it is set at the furnace kicks on about once an hour for 10 minutes or less. So I guess that's good insulation. New siding and windows this year so that helps. Housewrap is worth every penny BTW.

Today is the type of day I am glad my car came with the heated seats option.
A balmy 7° compared some of the others posted here but wind chill below zero.

Just heard SCE&G is doing rolling blackouts because of the demand. Hopefully, that was my one. Could have been at a better time than 4:00AM.

Must be mostly electric heat?

Is it more common for gas heat in the north? I imagine it is, but I don't know how economical electric heat is compared to gas heat.

I've never heard of high winter electric demand around here, so I'm assuming the colder regions focus more on main/secondary heat sources that aren't electric.

my apartment has miserable insulation.

I'm sitting in thermal pants, sweats over those, I'm wearing a hoodie as well - and I'm shivering sitting in front of my pc.
Our thermostat is set to 75ºF or a little higher - it's less than 65ºF in here, and I think it might be dropping. It can't get any higher when every window and door frame is covered in frost.
