Shutdown over?

Republicans just released a government spending bill, then went back behind closed doors, and then realized they don't have the votes within their own caucus. Deadline is Friday.

Basically, the White House literally shit all over a bipartisan agreement on DACA and border security that would've made funding the government much easier. They are grossly incompetent, as per yoosh, and somehow it's all the Democrats' fault.

So, do you think the government shuts down, or do you think Republicans in Congress can get the votes they need for another continuing resolution?

Edit: Looks like Mitch and Chuck have reached a deal, in the absence of leadership from the President, to pass a CR through Feb 8. Mitch agrees to have an open, neutral process on immigration and an up or down vote on immigration reform and DREAM Act. What remains to be seen is whether the President gets on board, or what Speaker Ryan and the House will do given the Hastert Rule and the Freedumb Caucus' tendency to throw a wrench in anything "bipartisan".

Honestly, no one wan'ts a government shutdown. As a tax payer, it costs us a TON of money restart all the things that "stall" as was the case in the past shutdown..... pretty pathetic that it's come to this.

If the house convservatives want to do the Dems heavy lifting for them then great. If vulnerable senate Ds don’t get anything to pass then it will be hard to paint them as voting for a shutdown.

I'm not sure it's gonna work out. Trump was supposed to sign off on whatever immigration deal came to him and went all ballistic when they did everything he asked for. Democrats are going to be very hard to work with given a lot of their cooperation has been based on a promised imminent bipartisan DACA agreement.

Seems to me that Trump's reckless last minute ambush killing the bipartisan deal with DACA in order to shore up support from his base is more than enough reason to hold the Repubs responsible if a shutdown ever occurs.

That Trump previously mentioned that he would sign any DACA deal that gets put on his desk and then reneges on it is the key point could be used in noting that it's what started the slide toward a shutdown.

Shutdown probably won't happen, but Trump really screwed things up for the Repubs in Congress as it gives the Dems more leverage to get an even better deal for themselves if they ever have to go back to the table and start negotiations over again.

If the GOP wanted to do the right thing by the dreamers, the Guatemalans & Haitians in this country Dems would join them tomorrow. They don't & Trump doesn't either but they both try to pin it on the other.

The right thing, of course, is to give them permanent resident status & the same path to citizenship as everybody else we allow to immigrate. They're innocent people we should embrace as our own.

They were allowed to enter this country as a temporary fix. The law was passed by all concerned as temporary. The vote cast by each member of Congress was for temporary relief. This is not and was never intended to be permanent and to have a Democrats attempting to take advantage of the law passed is shameless.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporary_protected_status

"Temporary protected status (also called "TPS") is a temporary status given to eligible nationals of designated countries who are present in the United States. The status, accorded to nationals from some countries affected by armed conflict or natural disaster, allows persons to live and work in the United States for limited times.[1][2] Currently, persons from ten countries—Haiti, El Salvador, Syria, Nepal, Honduras, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Nicaragua; and South Sudan—have temporary protected status. About 320,000 people have TPS as of 2017, the majority from El Salvador (195,000), Honduras (57,000), and Haiti (46,000).[2]"

Totally agree with you on this. Too bad that not upsetting the base of the Repub Party, most of whom demand strict racist immigration policies from their legislators takes precedence over the right things to do for those who through no fault of their own find themselves American citizens in all ways except for their legal status.

Seriously would some of you wanting to give the TPS people citizenship explain what the purpose of the TPS program was intended to accomplish. From the word "temporary" I don't think it was intended to provide US Citizenship.

As for DACA I would be all for DACA and granting the existing persons on the DACA Program a green card provided that a line is drawn and it isn't continued or expanded. As far as I know Trump has said from the start that increased border security and a wall would have to go with the DACA agreement. The agreement they brought did neither.

"That's basically what Dick is saying. We're going to come out with DACA. We're going to do DACA and then we can start immediately on the Phase 2, which would be comprehensive....." DJT, 1/9/18, open meeting on immigration and DACA. (At 1:18-1:24 below

And let's not forget the pronouncement Trump made to the effect "I'll sign any bill they bring me on immigration," yet that didn't happen, either.

So how do you know what he wants or means. He says do something, they do, and he shifts like the wind.....

Is that a merit based opinion?

I wouldn't trust them to " Give me what I want first, then I promise we will do what you want later ".

That would be stupid, Regan was tricked by this ploy. He has said all along you will get DACA when we fund the wall fully and and do away with chain immigration .

But they did, per Graham there was a huge (biggest?) increase in boarder security funding, with *I believe* the agency being able to decide what to spend on in regards to tech vs boots on the ground. They even reached a compromise on expanding fences and *I believe* part of a wall.
I think there was even some kind of work certification for DACA path to Citizenship
