Shutdown problem with Win98SE...

Just completely reinstalled my system from a major meltdown. Now, for some reason, It hangs at the "Shutting down windows" splash screen. I installed the "Win98 Shutdown Supplement", but that didn't help. It wasn't doing this before the meltdown. Anyone have any ideas?

Eliminate unnecessary background programs from starting up (msconfig > startup tab) See if that works.

This problem can also be caused by faulty software that partially stays on, or if you have something connected to your PC, then remove it and try to shut down.

Try removing the network card and see if that sorts it.

Try resetting your BIOS options to all its defaults and test.

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information

Click on the Tools menu and select System Configuration Utility

Click on the Advanced button and check Disable fast shutdown

I had this same problem, this fixed it right away.

I was having the same problem. The link that Jackmds posted solved it for me. All I had to do was reinstall the patch when my virus protection program was disabled. Apperently the virus program keeps it from installing correctly Thanks for the help.

The link to the patch does the essentially the same thing I have described above, except it's a way of doing it manually, and you don't have to download anything. Not to mention, this patch sometimes takes 4-5 times of installing for it to finally work. Doing it manually works the first time, every time. Hope this helps. =)

I tried that divinemartyr, and got a DLL error. Damn you! Because of this I now have to find out WHY I am getting this dll error! hehehehe

If you weren't having a problem shutting down, you should not turn the option on. =) This option should not cause you to have a dll error however.

this fixed my problem, of course i had no idea wtf it was happening until i saw that option unchecked on my routine maintenance inspection a few weeks ago...

I had same problem.
I tried all the stuff, but didn't work.
The final soultion. Well, wiped out the drive, and did clean install.
My drive didn't have much data, so it was not a big pain in butt, and it worked.

Darn Windoze ... i'm having the same problem too and i'm going for my second install. Stupid 98se ... i'm gonna have to get my butt in gear and install win2k instead.
