Yep, that's what I got. He was overcome with guilt due to not helping his wife get help prior to her murdering the children. I'm assuming he also felt fairly shitty about offing his wife afterward.
If my crazy wife drowned my three kids i'd be pretty F'd up.. you don't ever recover for something like that.. lobotomy FTW!!!! the movie was awesome, DiCaprio is an amazing actor.
This movie practically begs you to watch it a second time now that you know the truth of his circumstances. I'm sure that there were hints all over the place of the true circumstances (like when he was interviewing the staff, and they were just laughing), but your mind isn't in the right place to see them.
All clues in the movie points to the fact that Leo WAS definitely crazy.
I just couldn't help but think there's something more though. I just can't quite place the importance of all these cigarettes throughout the movie.
The notable scenes that I can remember:
1. Leo couldn't get the cigarettes that he thought he had on the ferry
2. They had to change clothes and the man nurse gave him a new pack of cigarettes
3. As soon as he woke up from his dream within a dream, "Chuck" immediately gave him a cigarette which I thought was odd
4. Ben Kingsley offered him a cigarette and Leo said he quit. Kingsley himself stuffed the cigarettes and smoke a pipe instead.
What's the point of all of this if it's not making that the cigarettes actually contain drugs? Or maybe the director just wanna make a point that people during the 50s do smoke cigarette that much to the point of waking up to smoke one too?
