Whoa, is VIA slipping or what?

OCWorkbench has some specs and a nice picture of Shuttle's forthcoming AS25.

It appears SiS is moving in

1) No, VIA isn't slipping. Shuttle has no clout sales wise compared to the big boys. Quote from Firing Squad regarding Intel and the P4X266:

<< Currently, there?s only a handful of motherboard companies producing products based on VIA?s P4X266 chipset. Most large motherboard companies with tight relationships with Intel have retreated from going the P4X266 route and instead have made boards based on Intel?s i845 chipset. Smaller companies like ECS, Shuttle and Tyan went ahead and produced P4X266 motherboard regardless of what Intel has said simply because their market share is not significantly large enough for Intel to care. If for example Intel wanted to stop a company like Shuttle from producing P4X266 boards, its P4X266 products would make up for less than 1% of the world?s P4 chipsets ? hardly a threat to Intel, even by the closest definition. >>

A similar situation holds true for Shuttle and VIA.
2) It's a bit late in the game. SiS745 is right around the corner.

<< Smaller companies like ECS... >>

now that's funny...oh, how small they are...

it does seem kind of late, but still, it shows they might produce future SIS based boards then...either way, a good sign.

I think it's great myself, but VIA "slipping" b/c a small manufactuer releases one SiS735 board...I think NOT

I wouldn't mind having a Shuttle or Asus SiS745 board, but I wouldn't TOUCH a SiS735 board this late in the game.

The mention of thermal diodes and such...does that mean it will be able to take advantage of the new palomino features? How about thermal protection????

I have been told (unofficially) that SiS 745 does, in fact, utilize the Palomino's internal thermal diode.

If this is true, it is looking better by the minute. (As it would be the first single CPU board to do so.) Even the Siemens board Tom used for his infamous 'Heat Emergency' flick did not fully support it.

<< Here's SiS 745 specs

Also of note is the Firewire
>>

The Firewire stuff is a smokescreen SiS735 supported Firewire, and the SiS reference board that I used had 3 Firewire ports onboard, but none were functional. I have also NOT seen any other SiS735 boards with Firewire.

Smokescreen? LOL

Not sure why the reference board had Firewire connectors, as 735 doesn't offer Firewire functionality. Most likely, they had a third party chipset on the reference board offering that capability.

745 is the first and only Socket A chipset with built-in 1394. Whether manufacturers' choose to implement it is anyone's guess.
