shuttle kt266a + athlon 1.4 problem =(

Hi, my friend and I our putting together a system that consists of the Shuttle kt266a board, an Athlon 1.4, Winfast ti 200, and 2x128mb of crucial ddr ram. We are using an ide hd from a previous system also.

When we try to boot the computer up we get one long beep, no image, and the the beep just repeats it self untill I shut down. Not sure what the problem could be, I've checked to make sure everything is snug and plugged in properly. CPU problem maybe?

Please help!

PS, also using an antech 1040b with the psu it came with.

one long beep and several short beep means video card related problem.
constant short beeps means your RAM problem.

Aye, but this is just one long beep with no short ones, after the beep, it pauses and then repeats the beat, and will continue to do this until I power down. =(

Bad PSU, Video Card, RAM ? I have built two systems with that board, my works fine.

Don't know what it can be other than defective mobo or cpu, so we have decided to rma it. I did a search on beeps here and I saw someone say the HSF clip scratching the mobo could cause that, but our install was clean, we just got a bad apple I'm guessing.

Sounds to me like it is probably a memory problem. Have you tried it in different slots. Try just 1 stick of RAM at a time. It does not sound like a CPU problem.

Its a RAM prob. Try:
1. Reseating the RAM
2. Put 1 stick of RAM at a time
3. Try 1 stick of RAM in different slot.
4. Make sure tht the I/O voltage is correct (normally default setting is fine)

Tht beep is not associated w/ any other things.

Tried the ram switching and it didn't solve it. I saw 2 other threads saying this long repeating beep is a sign of a dead mobo =(

Have you tried this RAM in another MB? I would get some *different* RAM and try it. I have encountered that beep a number of times and I am quite sure it does not mean the MB is dead (or some of my MB's should be considered the "walking dead" ). Also, you might want to try pulling all the expansion cards out of the system and trying it.
