Shuttle systems can be very loud, however, they are easy to make quiet.

Replace the PSU fan with something like an ADDA ball bearing fan, and then replace the 80mm fan with a NoiseBlocker or even Antec Stealth fan. One is plug-n-play, the other requires you to open the PSU, cut the wires,
and solder in the new fan. Very easy to do, and makes a HUUUUUGE difference.

Cheers,

Josh

There were some reviews about this board with the 2700, so I don't see why the 1700 won't work. The 2700 ran too hot to keep the case on, hopefully the 1700 will run nice and cool on the inside. I'm looking at configuring this system with the 1700 too.

Just trying to get my Half Life 2 machine ready for this September.

Are you sure about that? Because The chipset doesn't support the 166/333mhz bus, neither for memory options in the BIOS nor does it support 333mhz bus processors. It support Tbreds upto 2600 with 133/266. If you have a link to the review, I'd like to see it.

Ha Ha. Thanks for keeping me honest. I looked at the review again and you were right. It was tested with a 2600+ for the Shuttle SK41G.

I still think the 1700 from newegg will work fine.

Is there (or will there be) a nice barebones set up like this that will support 333 FSB chips?

I looked for this on Newegg and they have a $40 rebate or a $60 online coupon (same form, just check the box for which you want). I assume you can use the coupon anywhere since its a Shuttle coupon. Why wouldn't anyone use the $60 coupon?

$60 coupon can only be used at Shuttle's online store, I believe.

It says on the coupon that if you don't choose anything, the $60 coupon will automatically be selected. Sounds like it can be used anywhere.

...and both newegg and ajump mention the $60 coupon.

The way I read the rebate, the $60 option is only good at the Shuttle online store. Info about the rebate program at the shuttle website confirms this:

http://us.shuttle.com/rebate.asp

Shuttle is proud to announce the XPC Celebration Rebate, commemorating the shipment of the 500,000 XPC. From 4/21/03 through 5/30/03, purchasers of Shuttle XPC SK41G barebones from specific participating resellers will be eligible for a coupon for up to $60 worth of accessories in the Shuttle Store. Alternatively, purchasers can choose to receive a $40 mail-in rebate check.

From when browsed before, the clear front, the parallel port, and the bluetooth options are the only things that jumped out at me.

Lets not confuse the issue with the CPU.

It will take any AMD 266mhz cpu. Just not the new Barton's 333mhz.

Correct?

BiggieC, you probably need to set your front side bus from 100/200MHz to 133/266MHz. May be a jumper on the motherboard (I don't know, 'cause I don't have one of these boxes).

BiggieC.... Let us know if you found a jumper.

I just bought one of these tonight and will be likely using the same CPU.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Thanks for the help guys. I refered to my mainboard manual and found that all i needed to do was remove teh jumper that set the fsb. It is default at 100. it was an orange jumber located near the agp slot if you plan on needing to remove it. Thanks ageain, anandtech to the rescue again.

This looks like a sweet deal. Are there any other negative issues besides noise? I'm seriously thinking about picking one up. TIA

I only wish the optical out was located in the back not front. And that it had perhaps a tad better onboard graphics.
But.... I can always slap in a nice video card later.

What version BIOS are you guys running? Did you flash the new (this month) bios release? If so... did it allow a higher FSB tweak above 165MHz?

I would highly recommend getting one of these. Frys was selling this same computer for 206 after rebate adn i saw several people getting them. Its really not that noisy, but i am waiting to get a deal on a good agp video card so i can use it for games. Keeps cool with an xp 1700 thorobred not overclocked, and the system looks cool.
