For those of you woe haven't heard of this, it is a mini case/motherboard combo that supports AMD XP's, has an AGP slot, a PCI slot and 2 DDR slots. Everything else is onboard.

It uses the VIA KM266 chipset and has some C-Media 8738-PCI-6CH/LX sound card onboard.

Does anyone have it? How well does it perform versus a normal sized motherboard (EpoX 8KHA+ that I have now)?

I will be putting my XP 1900+, Radeon 8500, 48x burner, and 2 80GB 7200 RPM drives into it. Do you guys think the 200W PSU is enough?

Another issue is the CPU fan. It uses the heat pipes that draw the heat away from the CPU up to the case fan/heatsink thingy. Do you think it will work well enough?

Thanks for any info!

I have the SS51G, and I don't like the airflow in the system with regards to the hard drive. The SS51G also uses the heatpipe/raditator ICE system, and the system kept my hard drive the same temp as the CPU (50C). I removed the floppy drive (wasn't using it anyway) and raised the hard drive up, and installed a hard drive cooler, one that fits underneath the hard drive (had to mod the drive cage a little with pliers to get it to fit). That helped a little, but the hard drive still runs hot (about 40C-44C).

I don't recommend it if you're going to use two 7200rpm drives, and a burner. Unless you do some serious mods, like installing a tornado fan in place of the regular exhaust fan, and rigging up some extra intake fans, or trying some other heatsink in place of the ICE heatpipe/radiator.

lazybastard is right about hd airlfow on ss51g, but it's great on sk41g. the sk41g uses a new chassis with intake holes near the hd, and that big 80mm fan in back pulls cool air from the front right across your hd.

What intake holes near the hd? You mean the ones on the sides of the case? The SS51G has those, too. They don't make a bit of difference. I removed the front ports on my SS51G so air can get in through the empty port holes in the face plate. I also have an SS50, and I switched the ICE heatpipe with the Arkua heatsink/fan from my SS50. The fan that comes with the Arkua heatsink is really loud, so I bought one of those YS Tech 70mm TMD fans to replace it. But, I had to mod the plastic "retainer" that the fan mounts on, because the TMD fan is a little bigger than a standard 70mm fan. I also tried using an 80mm 50CFM 40dB Sunon fan as the exhaust fan. But, even using a rheostat to slow the Sunon fan down, it was still too loud. So, I'm using an 80mm 39CFM 32dB Sunon fan to exhaust. I may try using the fan that came with the ICE. It's a Sunon fan that is louder/faster than the 39CFM 32dB Sunon, but not as loud/fast as the 50CFM 40dB Sunon.

You know, remember I have my hd up where the floppy drive is supposed to go. But I put the floppy cover back on. I bet if I take that cover off it'll help a lot better than the small port holes at the bottom of the front bezel.

the newermodels have some holes around the HD cage I believe. they improve the airflw.

Yeah, I saw that article from 2CoolTek. I seriously doubt they could silence a Tornado. Besides, I can't use that Tt fan speed controller. Both my PCI and AGP slots are being used. I have a Hercules Gamesurround Muse XL, and a Gainward GF4 Ti4200 in my SS51G. I already had the Sunon 50CFM 40dB fan I mentioned before, and it was still too loud, even after I bought a Swifttech rheostat to slow the fan down.

If I were you, edro13, I'd wait for the upcoming nForce2 chipset XPC. And I would seriously consider getting a 5400rpm hard drive for it, instead of the 2 7200rpm drives.

Also, in case I haven't mentioned, the XPC's are like every other mATX system or smaller that I've owned or read about: crappy at overclocking. I've yet to find any mATX or FlexATX sized mb that has adjustable CPU core voltage. Although, I believe the SS51G is the first small form mb that I've seen that has memory voltage adjustments.

Don't get me wrong, you can OC in the Shuttle's. I got a 1.6A up to 138FSB in my SS50, but the onboard NIC was only stable at 125FSB, or lower. And I'm running another 1.6A at 133FSB in my SS51G. I haven't really tested the overclocking in the SS51G, though. I was running a 2.0A non-oc'ed until last week, when I switched to the 1.6A@2.1(133FSB). I just lucked out to get 1.6A's that would run that high stable at default voltage, I guess.

I could care less about overclocking. I was over that back in the P3-667 days. I just want a reliable, performance driven machine.

Remember....this isn't going to be my "LAN" computer or anything.....this is gonna be my MAIN computer, so it has to be top-notch.

I really don't feel like waiting on the SN40, because I have waited on the AGP, AMD version for the last 6 months.

I think I will get it and if I have any problems with heat or stability, I will just sell it on the forums

If anyone else has input...... let'er rip!

Instead of bumping here, go to Sudhian.com's forums. They have a forum dedicated to SFF PCs, and one of the regulars is a rep. from Shuttle. You'll get your answers far more quickly and they'll probably be better, to boot.
