I have recently purchased a Shuttle XPC SN45G v3.0 (nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset) for a friend and in my testing before I delivered it, I have found that it was unstable when running the CPU bus at the same speed as the memory bus, if two DIMMs are being used (as in dual channel mode). I have tried out the following components:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 2500+ and 3200+ (133, 166 and 200 MHz FSB)
2 x Elixir PC2100 CL2.5 DDR RAM (Exilir 7.5 ns chips)
2 x Apacer PC2100 CL2 DDR RAM (Nanya 7 ns chips)
2 x generic PC3200 CL3 DDR RAM (Winbond 5 ns chips)
If the CPU bus speed is set differently from the memory bus speed, everything works fine. This is also the case when only one DIMM is used (not dual channel mode). Working confiugurations include:
Athlon XP 1800+, CPU bus = 133 MHz, RAM = 100, 166, 200 MHz.
Athlon XP 2500+, CPU bus = 166 MHz, RAM = 100, 133, 200 MHz.
Athlon XP 3200+, CPU bus = 200 MHz, RAM = 100, 133, 166, 200 MHz.
Athlon XP 1800+@1150 MHz, CPU bus = 100 MHz, RAM = 133 MHz, 166 MHz, 200 MHz.
Note that the Athlon XP 3200+ works with 200 MHz bus and 200 MHz RAM. With any other bus speed, if you set the RAM speed to the same no matter what the timings are (set to "Optimal" in BIOS for maximum stability) the system is very unstable and will not finish installing, or loading Windows XP.
I'm wanting to run the Athlon XP 1800+ with PC2100 RAM (since they're my friend's parts), but this is a combination that is very unstable.
Anyone have any ideas? Send it back?
