hey guys, that shuttle barebone recently caught my eye

I'm planning to stick a 90nm winchester in it, and we all know they r good OCers.
The shuttle seems to have good OC options in bios But my concerns are
1. Limited airflow in the shuttle case
2. only a 240W psu, and I do intend to put in a decent video card, maybe 6600GT or something

so are those 2 factors going to hold me back on OC???
the guys who actually own the case, how high did u manage to clock it??

I'm hoping for a 2.4Ghz at least with the 3200 or 3000+ winchesters

thx guys

Don't own one yet, but one is on the way, and I have identical plans to OC. One resource that's helped me immensetly is HERE.

Side note... The 3000+ has a max multiplier of 9 while the 3200+ is set at 10. To get to 2.4GHz and running your RAM at 1:1, with a 3000+ you'd have to have RAM capable of 267, w/ a 3200, 240.

Airflow and power supply haven't seemed to limit OC'ing from the many success stories I've read about.

The Shuttle PSUs are very high quality; I don't think you will have issues running a 6600GT.

You can do a few mods to improve the airflow... just removing the rear fan grille should give you a few degrees drop in temperature.

i've heard about removing those fan grills and replacing with those wired ones, does it really help that much??

Those fit inside, but they do take up the one and only PCI slot in the case, so you can't put in a sound card or TV capture card. If you aren't planning on using its PCI slot, they're a nice add-in extra. Hmm... actually, I have a spare one floating around and haven't filled my PCI slot yet, maybe I should throw it in.

but would their provided cpu cooler with no added case mod or extra coolers be sufficient for a 20-30% OC??? say OC a 3200+ or 3000+ to 2.4ghz ish??

By my understanding, putting a non-winchester 3800+ and a 6800GT came moderately close to the power supply limits for the guy that was testing it. Considering that winchesters use less power I think you cam probably get a winchester core CPU overclocked without power supply problems. With a heater designed for up to an FX series processor, you probably have a bit of leeway on heat as well. The cooling fan on my system is almost always whisper quiet (though it does spin up a bit for WoW), so I'd imagine that its got plenty of headroom for an OCed processor if you turn the fan up to full constantly.

I wouldn't push it too far, but there should be at least some room with it. I'd definately look at an ATI card over an nVidea, however, since power consumption will be an issue if you try to go too far. Its hard for me to give specifics since I haven't OCed my 3500+ winchester or my x800XT, but my feeling is that there is at least some room, even if you don't hit your maximum goal.

I have mine running at 3.25ghz now.

Ran prime for more than 24hrs so it seems stable. Haven't tried pushing it further yet... 3.4ghz seems tempting to try but the prospect of frying a brand new com and cpu ain't too enticing.

BS!! how hte hell can you run it at 3.25ghz in an sn95g5??? you'd need subzero temps to do that, which is highly improbable.

Clearly, he is confusing the SN95G5 with an Intel based box.

I thinking of getting this model. I was just wondering if I need to buy a processor with with heatsink. Or does shuttle have it own heatsink included?
