Shuttle + XP1600 help!

I have a Shuttle AK31 v. 3.1 and an Athlon XP 1600+ which I got yesterday. Installation went fine, but upon power-on, I get no video card output and a long (2 sec) beep which repeats every 2 seconds. I've tried switching the RAM (Crucial DDR) around in various slots.

There is little on the Shuttle website or manual to point me in the right direction here -- I assume either the mobo or CPU is defective, any way to tell definitively?

(No, I don't have an extra Athlon to swap in...argh!)

Have you tried enabling the cmos jumper for a few seconds, with the system off? I had to do this to get my 1700 xp to boot.

CPU + mobo + RAM + video = long beep
CPU + mobo + RAM = long beep.

I tried moving the RAM to every position on the board, as well as resetting the CMOS.

What Power supply are you have also what vid card?

What type of DDR memory are you using? Have you tried just one in different banks?

Now if your Power supply is ok and is AMD aproved you might have grounded in unintentionailly take the board out and place it on some cardboard then try to power it up.

I'm using a brand new Antec 300w supply - works stellar with the P3-450 mobo in there.
And a Creative Labs TNT2 - ditto.
And a single 256MB stick of Crucial DDR.

I've gotten an RMA on the board and processor, I'll see what happens. Thanks for the help!

You may have better luck with your new board. The new bios upgrade released yesterday seems to make the board more stable. The upgrade number is AK31s2ec.

Long beep in endless loop...mean RAM not seated properly/bad RAM/ incompatibility. Nothing wrong w/ ur mobo.

I have the same problem with my new system. I went with the shuttle because I have the ecs k7s5a in my other computer and it's got sound problems so I thought I'd try this new board and see if it gets rid of the sound problems. Now I can't even start it up.

Amd xp 1600
Stock HS/Fan
2x256 crucial ddram

Wouldn't do anything this morning so I reseated the ram. Now I get a two second beep, five second nothing, two second beep loop. Any ideas would really be helpful.

ps Just Cleared CMOS and rebooted, didn't help.

pps Just removed all PCI cards and disc CD Rom still no dice.

ppps Just removed the CPU and HS/Fan and put em back on. Still no dice.

pppps Just tried new ram from my other machine, the ram worked fine in the other machine but still no dice here.

I think I found the problem, there's a little black chip on the mobo that looks like it's melted. I can't imagine that's a good thing. Gonna see about getting an RMA not sure how to though so I might be back
