Sudhian Forums (which I just discovered closed down some time ago) used to have what was arguably the best info resources for Shuttle owners. Would anyone know if the history of their forum traffic happens to be archived somewhere on the web ? Are there any good alternatives still online today ? I believe there was at one time a Shuttle Users Forum under the auspices of Shuttle itself, but I'm not finding any trace of this now.
Yes, I could contact Shuttle support itself, but I have a long history with them, and know that this is a very hit or miss proposition, with plenty of misses along the way. My questions do not concern current or very recent models, worsening the odds. At the now gone Sudhian Forums, you could usually find other knowledgeable users who could tell you "That's not going to work (because . . . )" or "Yes, I have successfully done that."
Just to give you the basic question I had in mind here, I'm looking to retrofit a couple older XPC models for USB-3 (via add-in cards) that now only have USB-2. In one case, this is PCI, in another it is PCI-E. What I ran into was a fundamental incompatibility between the controller on the USB-3 expansion card and the chipset of the Shuttle motherboard, apparently causing the 'CRC Checksum Failure' at bootup. I've tried more than a couple brands or models of USB-3 controller card, but several of them are based on the same NEC chipset. I suppose I could try every brand and model that is still available, but don't know how practical or productive that would be. So much better if someone has already done this, in a way that worked.
The Shuttle models involved are SP35P2_Pro, SX48P2_E, & SX48P2_D. (There is one card I have around here somewhere, which has not yet been tried in the SX48.) All of these models have e-SATA (which I like and use), so the lack of USB-3 is not critical, but it would still be a very useful enhancement if possible, seeing as all the WD etc. external storage has gone over to USB-3.
