One of my fish is dying (I have 2 goldfish) and I don't know why
Sick fish

It's just lying on the bottom of the glass (I removed it from the tank) and breathing but not moving around.

update: it died.

weird. i cleaned out my turtle tank last night and put about 8 fish in the sink full of water for about 15 minutes. they all died for some reason.

they're just feeder fish but i had one for about 2 months and it sucked to see it die. is there a certain way to move goldfish into a new area of water?

Maybe its just his time

What kinda temp is the tank? Goldfish like cooler water than tropical fish.... It may be too hot for them, what about chemical levels (Nitrate, Chlorine, PH balance?) of the tank.

what temp was the sink water? may have been too cold or hot.

Yea, could have been thermal shock. Water temp variations can only be less than a degree.

I'd leave him alone for a day, he might get over it.

i sat there the entire time and made sure it wasn't hot nor cold, just right imo. maybe a little warmer than the tank they came from. thing is, this has happened before and it stills erks me.

i've heard something that they go into shock sometimes when being moved to different areas of water but how do you prevent it?

Tap water is chlorinated, so that could have done it. Also, if there was any soap residue in the sink, that would be a possible culprit. Temperature shock is likely as well.

recently wash dishes or hands, or clean the sink with chemicals? if so, thats what killed them.

whenever i clean my beta's tank, i put him and the algae eater fish in a dedicated plastic tub. i NEVER out them in any sink. sinks will have chemicals in them. you wash your hands, dishes, cleaning chemicals, etc. have traces in the sink. that will kill the fish super fast.

it would be like a human huffing a mixture of comet and bleach. instant death, oh n0es!

so maybe next time just grab water from the tank they were in and put it in there instead of adding new water.

yeah, tap water def. has chlorine in it, but that will not harm hearty fish too much. but the temp difference and the possibility of chemicals or soap, that will kill them really fast.

whenever i move my fish out of the tank for cleaning, i put them and some of their original water into a dedicated plastic tub that never gets cleaned with soap or anything. its just for the fish only. i had de-chlorified water thats in another tub, that is set at room temperature before i put it into their tank. then i pour the water from the isolation tub into the tank, and the fish go back in. ive been doing this for over a year now, and both of my fish are fine.

10 gallon tank, two 2-3 inch size fish. its easy to clean, and their fun to watch.

If you used untreated tap water that can kill them. Also, rapid temp changes can kill them

The room is probably upper 60s, and I can't find my thermometer to check the water right now.

Not sure. The water should have gone in ok though - I use tap water through a Brita and sit it out overnight to get matched temperature and let the chlorine evaporate. I might need to get some water test kits to check.

Too bad about the fish. Though it looks like a common comet goldfish, or feeder fish. Should be able to get another for a buck so. Or you could get some fancy guppies and watch your fish multiply.

As for putting fish in a sink full of water, ya, that's not too bright. Sorry. All kinds of chemicals and such are already in the sink. And the chlorine in the tap water also will kill them. Temperature shock also can do it if it's extreme enough, and depending on the type of fish.

Changing the water 100% often will kill the fish outright. It's best to save the water because it has a lot of good bacteria in it. Try dumping the water into a bucket. NOT ONE WITH ANY CHEMICAL RESIDUE IN IT! You can then scrub out the bowl and re-fill with most of the water if it's not too grimey.

With our fish tanks we don't have to clean them very often. We have filter systems in them though. We use a syphon to suck out the bad water and to vaccum the gravel. It gets a ton of fish crap out. It clouds the water, but that settles quick when it's all done. We also have a dedicated green dishes scrubber that we only use for cleaning the tanks. We scrape off any algea on the walls with that. By the end, half the water is gone, so we re-fill with tap water. We also have a chemical we add to the water to de-chlorinate it. That can be bought at any fish store. Only a drop or two per bucket. The fish never come out of our tanks during the cleaning process.

You can't just put fish in a sink full of water. Tap water has too much chlorine in it and its obviously going to kill them off.

Why don't people do anything when they see a (gold)fish is going belly-up? At least have the decency to put it out of its misery :frown:.

When I had a beta fish, the people at the fish store said to poor some of the tank water, along with the fish into a plastic bag first. Clean the tank out and refill it with water. Tie off the bag and put it into the tank. This lets the fish slowly adjust to the new water temperature. After a while, you can release the fish back into the tank.
