Anyone else get to do this? I must say that it is so sweet this time of year... getting to sell back 32 hours of sick time and getting a nice check in return.

That is a pretty cool option that I wish I had, I lose most of it each year.
Mine is maxed at 150 days, but we don't get buyback. 2 of the days each year convert to personal. Supposedly when I retire I can "trade" the time for continued health insurance for life.

Our sick and vacation are lumped together into "PTO"
If there is unused PTO time at the end of the year, you can either roll it over (up to 40hrs IIRC) or cash out.

I have never heard of sick time being able to be sold back. Interesting.

We used to be allowed 6 sick occurances per year. Each could be up to 5 work days (then short term disability could kick in).

However, we had a surprising number of people that were sick 30 days every year.

Sick time is more or less time you MAY need, it's not a given. It sucks for the corporation when a liberal policy gets raped.

That said we are now down to 5 sick days. However we also get 5 personal days and I get 3 weeks of vacation on top of the standard 10 holiday days.

I can't complain. Vacation and personal days can roll over up to double your annual amount.

I can use it for service credit, roll it over into my 457/401 or use it. I can't sell it back.

we don't have sick/vacation days separate, we only have PTO.

and i just don't understand people who build it up to 100+ hours or so.

it's good to take time off every now and then, and to go on vacations. it's not healthy to work work work and never have time for yourself.

at my new job they highly encourage taking time off.

Agreed. To me my time off away from work and spent with friends and family is WAY more imporant than the cash out.

That being said, I am carrying over 15hrs or so, so I'll probably cash it out versus add it to next year's pool (hey I need a few extra pennies I calculate come tax time

Wish we got it. I have a little over 3 weeks of sick time banked. Either that, or I wish my company would let us convert some/all of it to PTO. Even if they capped the amount we can convert or put in a conversion factor, i.e. 5 sick days for 1 PTO day, I'd jump on it.

When I started my vacation on the 18th of this month, I had 733 hours of vacation and 260 sick leave. Still have about 40 hours of Furlough and about 16 of Personal Holiday/Holiday Credit.
I will have used 72 hours of vacation when I go back on the 6th.

My 500 or so hours of sick time is something I consider Short Term Disability. Long term disability pays only 70% and goes into effect after a minimum of 4 months. In the unfortunate event that I live through a bad car wreck, my family is covered.

This. I may have to have surgery and I could be out 4 months.

I am paid out automatically for unused sick time.

Too bad I actually was sick this year and used it all.

I don't get to sell it back, I just build it up and use it to take extra vacations.
This is probably the best company policy.

The worst is when you don't get paid sick days. In jobs like that, people show up sick so they don't miss a pay check and have their house taken away by the bank. Then everyone gets sick. I've done this lots of times, even when I worked in fast food. You can't see that I'm sick because I'm not coughing or anything, but that doesn't change the fact that I really am sick and spreading germs everywhere.

A close second place for worst policy ever is when you can sell your sick days back. You know what that means. Don't take your sick days, show up sick, infect everyone, sell the sick days back for money.

Best policy is sick days that cannot be sold. Showing up sick has no immediate monetary value, so sick people will actually stay home instead of spreading it to everyone else at work.

Can't sell back sick. Used to be able to cash out 80 hours of PTO but they yanked that last year. Lot of people pissed over that one. We have A LOT of highly tenured employees...20+ years of service that are accruing like 8 hours of PTO per pay period. They simply couldn't take enough time off a year so they would cash out two weeks at Christmas.

Not any more.

We lost our buyback program this year too. It sounds like there were some lawsuits recently that went against employers involving overtime and buyback programs so employers are just yanking them instead of dealing with the complications.

I personally never used ours. I always took my time off.

My company doesn't technically have a limit on sick time so there's nothing to sell back.

I can roll over all my sick time until I retire, up to 200 days worth. I've used 1 sick day... ever.
I donated 2 sick days to the sick bank (if someone has a long term chronic illness, people are allowed to "give" them some of their sick time.) I have well over 100 *days* worth of sick time built up.

When I retire, I can cash in those 200 days & roll them into my 403B account. IIRC, I get $180 per day, so that's a $36,000 "bonus" when I retire. I also get 3 personal days each year. At the end of the year, I can either roll them into my sick time, else get paid for them. I've used 1 1/2 days of personal time, in over 10 years.

I have 987 hours of sick leave saved up. That be just shy of six months. No buybacks. I've seen enough older employees need it that I'm glad the pile is there.

It is all one lump for me, so if I am sick, or take a vacation, either way I spend what I accrue.

I don't think that I can sell back, but it is moot as I am just starting my second year with the company I am with, and therefore don't have a whole lot of time, and I value my time away from the office.

Plus, since I am a govt contractor, I get most all of the federal holidays off, which is nice, I get a freebie day in I think, 9 of the 12 months. MLK Day? Day off. Veterans' Day, off. Memorial Day, Labor Day, President's Day even I think.

We have unlimited sick time. We don't accrue any set number of hours.

We are allowed to accrue up to 440 hours of vacation. Youlose anything over that though. It does not get paid out.

It's a hedge against lay off. If you do get laid off you can get a check for several months salary if you have your vacation maxed.

I've only accumulated 311 hours in the last five years. I'm trying to get to the 440 hour maximum.

I need to work for your company. We get 64 hours sick time each year, but it doesn't roll over.

We dont have sick time. If we are sick, our spouse is very sick, our kids are sick, or anything like that, we just take the day off. No set hours, none of that bullshit. Who can tell how many hours they are going to be sick a year?

I don't understand people who dont take vacation. I'd gladly give up my pay to take another week of vacation a year. I just started last year so I only have 2 weeks, plus holidays, but its not enough.
