We dont have sick time. If we are sick, our spouse is very sick, our kids are sick, or anything like that, we just take the day off. No set hours, none of that bullshit. Who can tell how many hours they are going to be sick a year?

I don't understand people who dont take vacation. I'd gladly give up my pay to take another week of vacation a year. I just started last year so I only have 2 weeks, plus holidays, but its not enough.

without any qualification, where are you working?

Nope, no sick time buy backs for us. Then again, we technically have unlimited sick time, though if we use more than ~7 days of sick leave a year, we could get flagged. Who knows what happens then? No bonus? Small raise?

Vacation time can't be bought back either. Only cashes out upon quitting/getting terminated.

IT for a major insurance company, however, it was the same when I worked at Sprint. I shouldn't be penalized for having to take days off work when I or someone in my family is sick. Its also definitely not a vacation day to stay home when you are sick so it shouldn't be treated as such.

Well it's got to be outlined somewhere in your employment contract.

I doubt there is a clause "the worker will recieve unlimited sick time to use as they see fit".

Anyone else get to do this? I must say that it is so sweet this time of year... getting to sell back 32 hours of sick time and getting a nice check in return.

I wish, but they give us too many sick days so there's no way they'd allow us to sell them. We can roll over (IIRC) 10 days per year and can have a maximum of 28 sick days, which I'd guess that most people have the maximum number.

That would be nice. We can't sell back vacation or sick time. We can only carry two years worth of vacation time. If you have more than that they take half and convert it to sick time and the other half you just lose. Reason we can't tend to build up so much vacation time is we have a lot of classes and training we have to do that we get paid comp time for. Pretty much everyone has enough comp time to use that they can't get vacation time burnt off. Usually you just lose a bunch of comp time.

Sick time carries over indefinitely. Most use it to retire early if they actually stay until retirement. If you leave you just lose it, you don't get paid for it. Most people need to use massive chunks of sick time eventually. This work is hard on your body and knee/back surgeries are very common with several months off not unusual.

Nope, its not. They treat us like professionals because we are.

I call shens, especially an Insurance Corporation not having this as part of their disclosures.

I get sick and decide I need sick days for the rest of my life because of stress symdrome or something....

When I used to be on salary where I worked there was unlimited sick days. The caveat was that you where still expected to keep up with your work. So usually when you called in sick you would spend a couple of hours remoting in and working from home, which wasn't bad.

It's exactly the same at my work. We have no number of sick days. We simply take of as many days as needed. For the most part, no one takes advantage of the policy.

It should have been outlined in one of the many documents HR provides.

There is some law on working though during a sick day/leave. We have to terminate accounts temporarily when someone goes on leave/long term/short term 'sick' legally.

So how is it outlined in the employment contract? There should be a specific section on this.
