Saw it this weekend and although it was pretty good, I think it's way overrated

I've heard the same from a co-worker who said unless you're a wine snob, don't waste your money.

I know very little about wine, but I loved it.
Bitter sweet romance, with some hilarious moments.
Best movie I have seen in a long time

I'm not sure if it's overrated. I haven't seen any of the other movies that are highly rated, but I've watched Sideways. I wonder if a few of the other movies are highly acclaimed because of their subjects (Ray, Aviator)...

Sideways isn't for wine snobs, I didn't watch it to hear what they had to say on wines. The aspects of the film that I enjoyed were:
1. Character development, very interesting personalities and quirks
2. Good cinematography, nice use of lighting and focus
3. Amazing acting, very good facial espressions, good control of voice and body movements
4. Subtle details, the interaction between characters, clues/ideas falling into place

There are probably more that could be listed, but that's all for now. I thought it was extremely good. I've spent HOURS talking to a friend about this movie. There are just so many details that you can talk about and analyze.

Without paying attention to all the little details, this film might seem very dull and plain. It's not a typical action/comedy/drama movie with very transparent characters.

in addition to your on-target comments, i really enjoyd the characters themselves, it is bizarre becuase in reality, with their presences and composure, you really should not like them, but you do. their developement was not dogmatic in any way, and that led to an entertaining movie, there are some great moments in there as well, and the main protagonist evolves, even though you do not expect either of the main characters to get out of their rutty " personalities"

Sideways is, quite possibly, the closest thing I've seen to American "dry" humor. Of course there are the blatant, outright slapstick parts, (hello naked guy chasing Miles) but it still felt oddly British at times. I know almost nothing of wine, but you don't need to in order to get most of the jokes.

I think it was good, very good, quite possibly the best film released in a while, but not the best thing ever. Overall I think The Life Aquatic was funnier, if you're going for comedy. But it's a very good film regardless. And it was cool to be able to say "I've been there, and there, and there," as I was born in the San Jose Bay area.

All true. My favorite aspect of the film was the thematic element of the search for perfection leading to bittersweet failure. Right before they go out to dinner for the first time they're watching golf and this dude puts this beautiful put that just misses, with the announcer saying "beautiful put." Then when the dude is describing his love for pinot, he talks about how it's the hardest grape to cultivate, so most people fail, and is why a good pinot is perfection. Then he has this almost perfect night short time with the woman, but the secret ends it. So the it has this consistent theme of bittersweet loss found in the search for perfection.

You very rarely see a movie with such a subtle thematic approach. Sideways is perfect and is one of the best movies I have seen in a while.

Sideways was incredible, and I know NOTHING of wines, outside of the fact that I like a few.

I saw Sideways and I thought it was very good. I think Paul Giamatti, although he's being type cast in this style role, is a super funny, Comedic Dramatician...... The thing I really liked about this film is that it felt real......... In that I mean the timing was perfect and you could feel yourself or your friends being in the same situations and they would play out the same way, in the same timeframes....it wasn't all up in your face just going from scene to scene, the storyline developed naturally, and for some people that would make it too slow of a movie...... I heard some say that it dragged, but for the rest of us, it was just perfect...... Some Very funny scenes, but it's not a laugh fest either...... Just real scenes.
Probably not the best of movies overall, but deserving of the adoration of the Awards crowd.....
This one I'll have to buy on DVD when it comes out...

Sideways was very good. I liked lost in translation a lot as well, but I could see where many people wouldn't like Lost in translation. Sideways is more universal in its appeal.

Overrated by who?? The movie studio? THAT's never happened before.

Everyone I spoke with before seeing it sed "yah, it's got some seriously funny stuff in it". No one sed it was the greatest movie ever made or that is was funnier than sh*t. So I went to see it...guess what?

yah, it's got some seriously funny stuff in it. I liked it.

That's horsesh!t. You still have the right not to go see a movie. Nothing's being forced down your throat, the studios are just putting out movies they know will make money.

See sig.

Oh yeah, and overrated is usually a term that people use when they don't like what the majority does. It's a way of seeming like you're on a higher level than the rest of the population.

I noticed that too. The Miles/Jack have what seem to be 'bad' character traits, but I still wanted them to persevere.

The camera action during the 'drink and dial' scene was nice.

I like the pinot noir conversation too. When Miles was talking to Maya about why he liked pinot noir, I think he's referring to himself. Very fragile, needs the perfect conditions, only in certain places, needs to be nurtured... He's telling Maya about himself...

The lighting on that porch made Maya look really radiant.

Paying to see movie doesn't necessarily mean it was a good movie. It's just means the marketing was good or it was in the theater for a long time or there was nothing else to watch.. any number of factors.

For the awards, I've heard it depends on the timing of the releases and if the critics even remember the movies from earlier in the year...etc
