MS has decided to stop production of Sidewinder peripherals due to decline in sales, and apparently old stock might be going cheap as they try to clear it.
That's too bad...they've always had really innovative gaming hardware. The reason they failed wasn't so much that the controllers weren't useful, but most games just couldn't be set up to use them effectively.
I haven't really used any of the game controllers, but the Sidewinder "Gamevoice" product was (is!) excellent. It's still the best way to chat with friends while playing a game, especially because you can talk to specific 'teams' instead of just to 'everyone'.
I emailed them that I would never buy another piece of their hardware when they wouldn't update their button mapping software for their non-USB sticks to work with XP.
