*sigh* Ever retired a PC and felt bad?

My workhorse computer (pretty much remote desktop, and backup/media server) -- an Athlon X4 630, which has run 24/7 since October 2009 (no case fans, and a thin 40mm cpu fan) has finally given up the ghost. The last few days, it's crashed with solid colors on screen, and I just opened her up and noticed a couple of caps are leaking.

Currently moving 656GB off of her and prepared to dump the mobo/CPU/case in the trash.

Goodbye old friend.

Strangely, I do. I still have my last couple PCs. Covers are off, and you can see where I picked through them for the new builds. I can't bring myself to get rid of them. Sure, 50% of it is laziness, but I don't like to get rid of things in general. In theory I could always reuse it for something, and they served me well over the years. Should have a better end than being thrown in the dumpster.

I feel bad if I can't find something to do with it. Most of my other computers I've been able to give away or sell. I'm currently sitting on 2 that I can't do anything with.

I'll pay shipping for the CPU if you are just throwing it away!

It's yours. PM me your address, I'll even foot the shipping and get it out Monday. No heatsink though, all I have is a 1U aluminum block I used when it was in an ITX case.

It's probably the only thing usable on the machine, besides the RAM. Case is busted up, no DVD drive and nothing else connected.

I learned to just throw stuff out. I was a packrat for years, and one day I just threw everything out.

And you know what? I didn't miss anything. ^_^

Last year I had to finally toss my Athlon Xp 3200+ machine. Hands down the best computer I have ever owned. Passed it down to my 10yo son who used it for a couple years before it finally just gave up.
Leaking caps were the culprit on it to but it had a good life.

I'll take the RAM if you can save it until next Friday. I'll pay for shipping plus extra.

Never.

I hold onto my machines for 4 or more years. By the time I part, I have wanted to kick it in at least a few dozen times for being slow or non-functional.

I usually sell all of my old electronics, or try to re-purpose them. I hate clutter and can't stand something like that sitting around, especially if it can be useful to someone else.

Sold my old PC cheap (like 100 bucks) to a buddy that gave it to his son for his first PC, an old AMD clawhammer rig, lasted I think three years for him before it just blew up.

It's in disgusting shape. It'll probably attract roaches if I leave it off in a corner somewhere. For a machine I relied on daily - I reallllllly neglected it.

This thread got me thinking about how old this computer is and what good service it's provided. I just checked my order history at NewEgg and got the parts in January 2008. Four and a half years of HEAVY use, it's earned a dignified retirement for sure. MSI Motherboard and Athlon X2 4000+ for $99 at the time, I'd say I got my moneys worth.

A lot of my builds are Frankenstein monsters. I don't think I've ever thrown a computer out. I just scavenge the dead. The board in my current system is three years old now, still running DDR2. Wedged an "unsupported" processor in there and it works. Hopefully AMD has something better up their sleeve when it's time to upgrade. Nothing wrong with Intel but their stuff is expensive.

The following laptops come to mind.

1) My first laptop was a Compaq 1500T about 10 years ago thanks to an AT Hot Deal. Remember back in the day when the Hot Deals forum was actually hot?

2) Thanks to the epic Dell $750 off $1,499 coupon I scored a 700m. It look a while to get used to the cramped keyboard but what what an amazing laptop.

I never feel bad the instant I do it since I'm excited of my new PC that I just built to replace it. But years down the line I sorta miss the old PCs.

The one I miss the most is the first one I built. It was an AMD 2000+ system with like 1GB of ram or something like that if I recall. It was kick ass at the time and ran windows 2000 for the longest time. I did not care about upgrading to XP when it came. I only upgraded when I went to play a game and it would not work in 2000 so I saw that as time to finally upgrade. Knowing XP would probably run like crap on such machine I then retired it. I don't really recall the other PCs after that. Think the next was an AMD 3200+ or something along those lines. I'm pretty sure I had a 2700+ at some point too, I think I had maybe upgraded just the cpu. I recently retired my Athlon X2 system. That system served me well too, but it was on it's last legs. There's a weird issue where it does not power on properly, think the power supply or case button is finished. I will probably part it out to build a server for our church. That's usually what happens when I retire a machine I end up parting it out either for myself or someone else. Usually it's too old to sell so I don't even look at that avenue.
