While I might not do much a day I still do about 600+ blocks with one computer. Well that computer broke, I was going to put some new thermal grease on my Athlon 700 (800 core) because I got a GFD. While trying to remove one of the stupid clips that hold the cpu to the heatplate, I ran the clip end into a VERY small transiter and now it won't boot windows. I'v been without a computer for almost 2 weeks now. I'm using a friends computer right now to let the ones that do know me, know what is going on. I hope to have a new Athlon my next week. I found a website that is selling 700's that are supposed to have 900 cores. If anyone can tell me that the week 26 700Mhz athlons have 900 cores that would be great!

Hang in there Dragonfire, hopefully BurntKooshie will be along shortly. You might want to add the words "Athlon question" to your post title, that should get his attention. BK has done a fair amount of research into Athlons and can probably sypmathize with your situation, since he... well, won't tell you what he did. Anyway, where are ya, BK?

Some Dutch advice;

it's easy to repair it, Just find someone in your neighbourhood who knows about micro-soldering

You can also send it to me, but it will take a week or so

g'day

BK still has his Cyrix, Mech. The only reason he hasn't been posting is that college is obviously leaving him busy, and he's becoming a writer for...

*dances and waves at mechBgon* I'm here 'ole buddy! Even though I have a lack of posts in this forum now, I read it just as voraciously as I did before. The only difference, is that I see no reason to post anymore

Dragonfire That is very sad news indeed. I too have killed an athlon 700. Mine was from an overclocking venture gone horribly wrong....

Anyway, the only way to trully know that a chip has a certain core is to open it up. Otherwise, its pure speculation as to what the part was really binned at.

I bought a week 19 Athlon 700, and, given that many 600's and 650's earlier on were given 700 and 750mhz cores, the fact that mine turned out to be an 800mhz core is of no suprise. Week 26....that's nearly 2 months after mine....my guess would be that, the MAJORITY (often times, they are binned below, but NOT always) of the 700's made 'round week 26 would have at least 850 cores....but that's speculation on my part.

Don't worry, I had to buy a whole new athlon again, and I've had the chip about a month, and the motherboard isn't even back yet. I feel your pain...

BTW - how small is very small? Its NOT one on the core I assume . Did you break it off? Try resoldering it? I know its small, but if its dead in your eyes, you might as well try....

I broke r132 off, its just to the upper left of the ones under the core. (hold the slot connecter to you) I can't have it solder back on either because the transister went flying, its gone....forever lost in my carpet.

edit/ Just orederd a Athlon 700Mhz which by the website says its "Guaranteed" to have a 900 core and 2.8 cache. I can only hope that it does. Went with overnight shipping!

Wouldn't 'r132' be a resistor? how many legs did it have?
Either way ,if its a seperate component on the PCB then it could probably be replaced.

See Andy2's post

Sorry to hear about your loss BTW

DragonFire, I feel your pain! I had to wait just over a week for a motherboard to get RMA'd. Darn thing just up and died on me. I've never heard of anyone localy having any troubles with an Asus motherboard. It's been up for a week now, crunching like a champ!

/me wishes DragonFire luck on the CPU core in his new Athlon!

r132 sounds like a resistor, and even if it's a transistor it's not that hard to replace. You only need (like Andy sais) to know somebody who can do the microsolderingfor you. At least it's worth the try.

Like I've said before, just send it to me. There's no risk I guess, because it's broke allready......

If you don't trust me, OK thats your choice but think it over.....

The resistor r132 can be replaced with one coming from a really defective Athlon (like broken in 2 pieces)

this was my last effort
mail me if your into it
