You know, there's a very serious war broken out a month ago and we have huge problems. This Oscar kerfuffle is a tempest in goddamn teapot.

There is a video clip of Will on Arsenio Hall many years ago where he pokes fun of the bald band member and then tells the audience that "Its a joke". I had to chuckle at that hypocrisy. Welcome to the white man's world, Will. BTW, his wife looked pretty good, as always.

A very different take on it (in the same paper).

(One thing about the Guardian, is that, being 'liberal', it makes a point of carrying multiple points-of-view - which is why, even though its overall stance is mildly right-wing, it is one of the few parts of the UK media that occasionally features actual leftist comments)

I mean this whole affair is kind of stupid, but Rock really needs smarter, less lowest-common-denominator material. He should take the slap as a bad review. His 'joke' before this one was speculating that if Penelope Cruz didn't win an award and her hubbie Javier Bardem did, she'd give him grief at home - pure 1970s level sexism.

Initally I thought it was setup. It wasn't though, and Will should face some type of punishment.

That was definitely assault, but Rock said he isn't pressing charges. Very curious what kind of blowback this creates for Smith, his movie prospects might be at Alec Baldwin level for awhile.

Probably my favorite response to all of this, gave me a good laugh.

Didn't watch the show as it aired, only the clip after it was in the news. I got the same impression though from multiple points of that interaction. From Will letting out a chuckle immediately after Rock delivered the comment, to how Rock leaned in slightly and looked like he was prepping to get slapped.

The only part that didn't fit a scripted event was Smith's hollering profanity after going back to his seat, which might have surprised (the other attending) people as much or more than the slap.

I agree with Muse though...this shit is stupid celeb drama, and there are more important things going on in the world at any given moment, much less with a war raging with the global eye on it.

Ask @Oyeve ...with his idiotic posts already in this thread, I'm sure the clown will tell you why it's Biden's fault.

Yup.....just a lame PR stunt.

Just heard a story on CBS news radio that "since the slapping incident ticket sales for Rocks upcoming tour have gone through the roof" and the Boston show is sold out.

Yeah.... not suspicious at all I sure its just coincidence.

That mean I can pin the blame on Trump?

From the sound of it, that (parody?) tweet isn't the weirdest take on the event

What began as an on-stage biff between two celebrities over a disrespectful gag quickly became a Thunderdome for increasingly irrelevant arguments, as millions of users experiencing the internet equivalent of a sugar high tried to cram it into whatever their pet issue was at that moment. Was Will Smith’s slap a sadly perfect example of toxic masculinity? Proof of Hollywood’s double standards on bad behaviour? A radical act of civil disobedience against ableism and misogyny? Evidence for structural racism? Evidence against structural racism? Cancel culture? A metaphor for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine? A deliberate distraction from that same invasion? Incontrovertible evidence of how the Holocaust could be allowed to happen? Brexit? Trump? 9/11?

As the facts of the matter are undeniably simple, many seasoned posters saw fit to engineer a series of increasingly abstract counterfactuals to litigate their chosen point. What if one of them were a white woman? What if the joke had been about asthma instead of alopecia? What if Smith had a gun? “Just a reminder that if Will Smith had slapped Betty White for a joke she made (however insensitive), she easily could have fallen backward, cracked her skull, and died of a brain bleed,” read one instantly viral tweet, pointlessly conjuring a scenario in which the deceased actor was not only still alive but making off-colour alopecia jokes at the Academy Awards.

Sorry, people who think this was just a stunt, is ridiculous. Chris may have thought Will was going to lean in and say something to him or playfully do something. You're jumping to conclusions.

Additionally, you really think that Will Smith would jeopardize his career in order for Chris Rock to sell tickets to a comedy tour? You would have to be an idiot of epic proportions to potentially hurt or ruin your career for a stunt like that. It makes no sense. What has Will gained from all of this? Academy is coming down on him. LAPD investigated it. He's getting a crap load of backlash on TV and Social Media. It's a complete lose-lose for him. Then delivers an apology saying how wrong he was. Yeah, this is all a stunt, lol.

Of course people are going to buy tickets after something like that happening. They want to see him talk about it in his show or see what jokes he makes about the incident, after the fact. Has nothing to do with coincidences or anything. It's people watching a train wreck for giggles.

Yep, just as stupid of her, despite how much I personally hate the guy. Trying to connect the blame there is silliness.

It's a FoxNews story that is misinterpreting her tweet. She's not blaming Trump for the incident. She's saying the reaction to it is part of the same reason we got him in the first place. It's nuanced, so I wouldn't expect them to get it right.

Yeah there is a war un Ukraine but people can talk and care about multiple things of differing importance at once, ya know? If its in reference to the news, we all know the news is going to forget about Ukraine in 1-2 months tops and eventually it will turn into one of those 5 second "update" bits where the real news is kept at the top of the hour before the talking heads go into an hour long trirade about how cupcakes are racist/CRT or something.

That said, and based on some stuff I've read about the Smith's marriage, it looks like Will Smith might be overcompensating for his wife's infidelity and the asskicking his manhood has taken through the entire thing. Why does he stick around? Maybe he's got some misguided hang-up about keeping his family intact for his kids due to some childhood trauma of his own. His weird unhinged acceptance speech after the fact sort of reinforces this belief for me.

Who knows, but that did not look scripted, both Chris Rock and Will Smith's exchange after the slap was clearly "lets get this shit back on the rails ASAP" from CR's perspective.

Although "The Slap" or "This Shit Slaps" would make a solid name for CR's Netflix comedy special.

I don't really believe it either but these days I don't put much past people.

It wouldn't even rate on my personal "WTF" scale if we found out it was planned compared to a lot of stuff that's happened over the last couple years.

...Hes such a liberal POS and so is his family....
Its a woke world. Too PC IMO. I wish they would roast Will but he would never accept. He's a P***y. can't type the word as this place is probably too PC as well.
We know who wears the pants in that family. Oh, am I allowed to say that???

Make a bunch of politicized comments in OT, then 'play' dumb if someone comments on it. Like a clown.
