A 6-year study in Palm Beach County of "most severe dog bite by breed" shows the top 10 breeds who have been identified in this comparison.

1988: APBT ranked 9th w/9 per cent of bites
1989: APBT ranked 5th w/15 per cent
1990: APBT ranked 5th w/16 per cent
1991: APBT ranked 9th w/10 per cent
1992: APBT ranked 2nd w/20.4 per cent (w/cocker spaniel showing in 1st)
1993: APBT ranked 5th w/16 per cent

Some of the breeds which placed above the Pit Bull's were Dalmations, Chows, Labs, Goldens, Rotties, Dobermans, and the Cocker Spaniel.

In a 1993 study, also in Palm Beach County, the bites were ranked by severity from 1 to 4 and the animal that was recorded as having inflicted the greatest number of severe bites was the domestic short-haired cat. A breed labeled as "pit bull" was in 5th place, following cat, German Shepherds, Chow and Lab.

beware of being mauled by pussy..? :frown:

LOL Of couse these studies have flaws since they don't include ownership percentages which is needed for an acurate percetage bites/percentage ownership mumber. However cats are basically free to roam in most communities so I'm not surprised the numbers are higher.

Exactly. Without these stats broken down by the % of the population for each of the breeds, they are relatively useless. To stretch it to the absurd, what if there were only 10 pitbulls in Palm Beach county and 9 of them were involved in severe bite incidents? While they may only rank 5th in the number of severe bites, it'd be fairly damning that 90% of the pitbulls in the county were involved in severe bite incidents.

Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Anyway the basic fact remains compared to any dog, a pure breed game pit bull is extemly potent and should'nt be owned by most novices or weak willed individuals. I hope and think that was fausts point by posting this not sensationalism.

That holds true for many/most large dog breeds.

I had two pit bulls when I was growing up. Very loyal and loving dogs. However, they can be violent (just like any other dog) if mistreated or if they become jealous.

You have never seen my Lab. He's stacked! Girls love him!!!! We have a Husky that lives down the road from us that likes to sneak out and teach my Lab bad things!!!! My Lab is part German though. He has the muscular build of a German and the fur and look of a Lab.

He's sweet and is nothing but a big baby! He would run from my poodle!

Yuck.

SIGH Numerous studies have shown The american pit bull terrier not anymore prone to biting than any other dog..

It's not the breed but the damage capabilty. All terreirs are aggesive But Bulldogs are very capable for their size.

What are you sighing about? Read the article now. Looks ridiculous doesn't it?

Friend of mine had a rottweiler that was so protective of their owners and friends. She would growl if anyone but people that she knew and trusted approached the basinet that had the families baby.

My rottie did that. she even made a bed for herself under the crib when we brought my kids home from the hospital. She would sleep in the room with the baby and if one of my kids made a peep franka would come out and get either me or my wife by whining and wagging her butt. we didnt need a baby monitor or big mean feriousious rottweiler was our baby monitor.

Are we to assume that the results of a study done in palm Beach County would be the same for a nationwide study?

By the way, this thread reminds me of the first conversation I participated in here at Anandtech. link

Pitbulls have been banned in certain areas in Canada because they make such nasty little animals as pets.

My girlfriend has two mutts:

Keebler - Rottweiler and Foxhound

Booger - Pit Bull Terrier, Great Dane and American Staffordshire Terrier

They're both the sweetest dogs you could meet. Huge, but sweet. Breed is not the be-all-end-all for temperament.

See? I told you dalmations were crazy.

I can vouch for that. A dalmation took a chunk out of my leg when I was a kid.

My pit/lab mix is a good dog, despite being shot by her previous owners. Good with kids, fairly passive, she even likes the new cat, which surprised me.

Pits suffer from bad PR, and a large percentage of them are raised up as fighters. They are the dog du jour for the guys that are into that. Used to be Rotties, Dobermans, and German Shepherds before that.

Also, I remember hearing a few years ago that the most bite-happy breed was the border collie. That's right-Lassie is a killer.

I only quoted one part of the article, read on. Also I stated there are problems with these stats, however any vet or vet tech like Faust will tell you pit have no more propensity to bite than any other dog. It's ignorance at it's pinnacle to think otherwise. The name "pit bull" sounds nasty and mean because of it's pit and bull baiting roots in addition the dogs look subjectivly meaner than other dogs which is why it sells papers to sensationalize these attacks.

I think labs are on that list because they are so popular, and people may assume that since most of them are docile creatures, that ALL of them are. That being said, our chocolate lab bit 4 people! most not hard, drew blood once. She had a habit of charging people at full speed, barking her head off, hair on her back straight up, and then stopping a foot or 2 away to keep barking. She did it once, and we zapped her with the shock collar, but it was slightly too late, because she thought the person walking their dog she was running after was the one that hurt her instead of the thing around her neck. Later on in her age, she didn't have the best motor control or vision, so she'd do the charging/barking thing and not stop in time. She bit a couple people in the ass like that.

Our next door neighbors black lab bit me right in the nuts when I was little, it drew blood and required 15 stitches! (the scar finally disappeared a few years ago). It was def the most vicious dog in the neighborhood. We lost many baseballs, soccer balls, etc in their yard.

My sisters bf has I think 4 pitbulls now. They are slightly aggressive, have really sharp teeth, I could see them hurting somebody. My cousin used to have a dalmation, until it jumped up and bit her in the eye for no apparent reason.

Thats been the extent of my dog biting xp.
