Signing up for Uber

Gonna need a ride from SAN to hotel Feb. 28, never Ubered before. So, looking, I see I have the Uber app on my Window 10 phone, and I go through the setup, putting in my email, phone number, agree to terms, it wants me to set up a pickup. Fine, I put in SAN, the hotel, now it wants specifics. I select my date and under it wants:

HH and MM

WTF is this? I assume it so I can choose hour and minute, e.g. in my case 12:15PM. But I can't get beyond 0 or 1 for HH.

WTH is this stuff?l I see no way I can put in 12:15 PM, my approximate pickup time.

MM had dropdown of: various times of day on 12/31/19 !!!!!

WTF is going on in this hair brained app?

At the top right it says Skip, so I suppose I should poke Skip. I'm mystified here. Obviously, this is 3 weeks away, but sheesh.

Please, besides demystifying my confusion in the OP, please give me some hints/tips/whatever in using this. Go Lyft? DL the Lyft app too?

How does Uber work? Do/should I tip? Security? I've heard this and that about it, of course, but only had IIRC one Uber ride and it was my traveling partner who worked it.

You do not need to set up an uber pickup 2 1/2 weeks in advance. There are tons of them near major airports and it will just be easier to request a pickup when you land.

OK, so just fire up when landed? I'm green so dunno. If it was Android I'd be comfortable I could tap someone and get help, but this is Windows 10 Phone. I'm gonna drop that for Android (I have a few unactivated very cheap $30 Android phones), maybe get a better Android phone, but or now, I'm on my Alcatel Idol 4S Windows 10 phone.

I don't know how to help you with the Windows phone part but I've used Uber 100s of times and have never ordered one in advance. Most airports now even have signs for "App pickup" locations that you can just follow to make sure you walk to the right spot. Worst case scenario here you just grab a cab if you have problems with the app on a Windows phone.

Don't make me cry. I got on the WP train because super cheap, data free GPS. Nice OS. Too bad it shriveled and died. I'm on my last WP. When it dies or I just get too sick of it, I'll dump WP and go android, period. My WP is high end, beautiful screen, super sound. My Android phones are $30 LG Rebel 3's. Figure to research and buy a better Android phone when I move to Android activated.

At a lot of the larger airports you don't reserve a specific ride, rather you get a number and then you go to the rideshare area and get put into a queue until a rideshare vehicle becomes available.

Secondly I would also see if you could just get a cab because sometimes Uber/Lyft is way more expensive than a Taxi. I tried to take an Uber in Boston from the airport to downtown and it was like a 30 minute wait and the cost was going to be about $30. I decided to take a taxi, got right in one no wait, and the cost was $20 after tip.

I called the hotel yesterday. Finally got a living female, got some things straight about my reservation (i.e. that I do NOT require a special room for disabilities, their online app screwed that up, and they never returned my repeated voice mails for a call back!). I asked about transportation from the airport and she said they have no shuttle service and that Uber/Lyft would be cheaper than a taxi.

i use lyft.

you can tip at the end of the ride. just book it when you land.

You can tip but it's definitely not mandatory. If I had to guess I would say the majority of people don't tip. If you felt like the driver did a good job then feel free to tip if you'd like but it's not like a restaurant where it is completely mandatory.

Their graphic didn't indicate what that could be, which if any, or any way to pick one. Then it says no rides now available. Maybe it will be on the day I have to set this up. Problem is the app isn't working on Windows Phone. I'll try to find an app update...

You can add a tip from your phone at the end of the trip. If it is an airport ride I usually tip $5, but it's not mandatory, and your driver doesn't see if you tipped until after you have gotten out of the vehicle and the ride is over.

I do suggest that (if you didn't already) you install both Uber and Lyft apps, set up your account for both, add cc etc at your leisure. Not something you want to take your first look at on the day you need it.


Problem is the app isn't working on Windows Phone

If there are no official apps that work anymore I know you can use Ubers website (in a browser on phone, tablet or PC) to get a car not sure about Lyft.

Go ahead and "confirm," though. You will be charged for the ride that you never took, that would now be on its way to pick you up wherever you want it to pick you up, but in the future.

I wouldn't trust using the Uber app on Windows phone as it is no longer supported. Definitely bring along your cheap android and rely on that.
