Looking for advice. My inlaws just purchased a Hewlett Packard AMD system that is almost silent. I'm planning an upgrade to p4 800mhz fsb 2.4ghz with hyperthreading on an abit is7g. I will be watercooling. The first step in upgrading will be the case and powersupply.

Here's a link of what i'm buying and where i'm buying it.

http://store.yahoo.com/directron/ma01bdjb.html

There are optional components including powersupply. I want an efficient and quiet powersupply running 5 dvd/cd drives, 2X120mm fans, 4hdds. Any recommendations. If i need to add info, LMK.

Thanks in advance.

That case takes only 80mm fans. If you want 120mm fans you're going to have to think about that.

That said, it's a good case. I'd choose an Antec TruePower 480 or 550 PSU to power all your stuff though. They're very high quality PSUs that are also pretty quiet.

You might want to take a look at SilentPCReview.com for some ideas about building a quiet PC. They have a lot of good "how-to" articles as well as a great "recommended components" section, and their forums are top-notch too.

Look @ the Ahanix Silent X psu, VERY VERY VERY VERY quiet, they claim its ~14dba, however I think its more liek 18dba (like anyone can tell the difference =P).

Waterpump: no doubt go with an Ehiem 1048 or 1250. They are quiet, have less chances of vibrating, and will not leak/overheat etc like other pump brands.

In reference to some of the answers:

I have a magdrive pump already.
I plan on modifying the case to accept 120mm fans.
And I NEED a case with a cover to keep my baby out of it.

Thanks so far. All responses are greatly appreciated.

Bump to the top for additional answers.

This is what my psu has to run:
Abit IS7-G
p4 800mhz with htt overclocked to ???
up to 1gig of ram
Radeon 9800xt
Samsung DVD/CDRW
Sony DVD+r/-r
Plextor CDRW
Liteon CDRW
2 to 4 120mm fans
4 sata hdd

Would the fortron fsp300 be sufficient power? I like the reviews and you can't beat the price. I also plan on mounting my 4 SATA hdds above the psu to take advantage of the 120mm airflow above the psu.

dba is a huge factor. Would the fsp400 be that much louder; would it still be "silent"?

I have a Zalman 400w PS, and it is truly silent. My HDs are the loudest part in my system.

Same here. Awesome PSU. Truely silent as opposed to other so-called "silent" and "whisper" PSUs. I teamed that PSU with the Zalman heatpipe for my ATI 9700Pro, and the Zalman flower heatsink for the P4 1.6A @ 2.4 and my system is dead silent. That's without a case, (I have my system mounted to the underside of my desk) so imagine what it would be like in a silent case like the Sonata.

120mm fans won't fit in that case. The biggest fans that you can fit (and even at that, you have to mount them in some odd orientations) are 92mm. There's a old thread at Ars about this and a newer thread at OCforums too.

If you need a lockable case with 120mm fans the only one I know that exists is the Chenbro Genie with the special order door. If it doesn't need to be lockable, the Antec 3700 series or the Antec Sonata might work. IIRC, there may be a 120mm version of a Compucase with a door but I don't remember if it locks.

lol well HP systems tend to let the CPU run very hot to say the least.

Antec PSU's are quiet and good quality, 4 Hdds aint gunn abe quiet if they are western digitals or something that'll defeat the purpose of having quiet fans, get seagates barracuda V's since those are they hdd's that are truely silent.

Then go for it.

I've seen pics of someone's attempt. They ended up having to cut away part of the I/O section at the back of the case to fit a 120mm fan. The side of the fan ended up sticking through the wall of the case.

I'd still look for the Compucase version if I was you. They modified the back sheetmetal just enough to fit a 120mm fan, but the grill is very restrictive and would need to be cut away. I think Compusa sells this case under their own brand name. Search the web for "compucase 6619". Newegg used to carry them but I think they recently stopped carrying that line.

I've done all the searching. My pc's aren't quite silent yet. However, all the testing has been done for us.

See the silent stuff under recommendations at this site:
