silly cats...

I awoke this morning unlike most mornings. There was no cat purring on my chest or nuzzling on the bedspread or meowing at my daughters door in an attempt to awake my daughter, which in turn would make me wake up, so she could be fed.

I went downstairs to let the dog out and feed the cats. When I fed them, only 2 showed up. The other, Roara, the one who loves to harass me in the morning, was nowhere to be seen.

Over the next hour or so I sporadically checked rooms, closets, garage and even outside (they're all indoor cats) all to no avail.

My wife awakes and starts searching. She calls me to the basement eventually and tells me she hears here mewing from a corner of the basement. Theres nothing but brick wall there. I now hear hew mews and in fact, it is coming from that corner. I start to look around the basement for any sort of entrance to the ceiling or wall behind it. I notice above some shelves a small opening. I get a stool and put my ear to it and the mew's are definitely coming from there, I go on the other side of the wall and I pop open the lowered ceiling and peek in. I see a hole going down about 2 feet long and 1 foot wide and the distinct crying of a cat. Above this hole is a hot water copper pipe. I now have two lovely burn marks on the top of my scalp (shaved head) from trying to peek down there. I get a flashlight and shine it down the hole and I see 2 eyes reflecting at me. Found her.

My first attempt at rescue involves dropping down a knitted blanket and hoping she'll grab on to it and I can pull her up. You see, the hole she is down is about 8-9 feet from the top of the ceiling to the floor with not much wiggle room. She is surrounded by concrete blocks so theres nothing for her to get out with. Back to the blanket. I'm dangling it down the hole and she finally jumps and grips onto it, unfortunately I wasnt ready for such a hard tug and she pulled it right outta my hands and down the hole it goes. Strike one. I try another blanket (with a much better grip now) for a good 10 minutes but she is unwilling to grab on.

My wife comes up with an idea to tie a string to a small bucket and put some food in it. I roll my eyes and amuse her. The bucket is pretty small but fits in nicely. I drop it and immediately feel tugging. I cant see whats going on because of limited space and that pipe but I start to pull it up and I can feel the weight, but about half way up the weight disappears and shes off. I'm assuming she was hanging on by here paws and eventually fell off. This continues for 5-10 minutes with limited success. Strike 2.

We then say lets try a slightly bigger bucket because maybe she cant fit in the other. She's pretty small for a cat, about 10-11 pounds. We tie a string to it, load it with snacks and drop it down. This bucket just BARELY fits down the hole. I feel the weight of a cat again and try pulling it up. After a few failed attempts she eventually jumps in the bucket, I'm pulling it up and I can tell shes in it. I get it to the top and she nonchalantly walks out onto a ledge and jumps down to the floor like nothing happened. SUCCESS.

I estimate she was in that hole for about 14-18 hours. Her new name is buckethead.

I'll take some pics if anyones interested.

Heres the culprit.

CLiffs:
Cat got stuck behind wall in basement.
Multiple attempts failed.
Eventually a bucket tied to a string with treats in it gets her out.

Great story.

Reminds me of one of the cats my sister and brother-in-law got from the shelter in Seattle. They were renovating the house, and the covers for the heating vents were off in some of the rooms. Well, one of the kittens disappeared down the duct. They called him, tried tempting him out with food, even tried turning the heat on in hopes it would flush him out but they had to knock off for fear of roasting him, having no idea where he was exactly.

Finally, they had to take the ducting apart, piece by piece. They finally found him laying down in the piece of ductwork right by the furnace, just looking at them as if to say, "What took you so long?"

They named him Subway.

Yeah...my wife and I had to fish out cats out of the dropped ceiling at our house when we first moved in. Didn't know there was a gap above one of the window wells where they could get in...fixed that now...

BTW, cute cat

We had to screw down all the floor vents in our house because one of our cats would remove them from the hole and try to climb down into the ductwork.

Your cat looks like one of mine, Lola. She was stuck behind a refrigerator overnight once. As far as I can tell she jumped from a box onto the top of it, jumped down behind it, then couldn't get out. Cats are funny but stupid.

That's OK. A few years ago I posted a similar story:

The motor on my jacuzzi tub had failed. And the surround had no good access so the entire front knee wall had to be removed while the tub was fixed. I warned the drywall and stone guys to watch for my cat and not let him outside or in the bathroom.

After the drywall and stone guy had left, I couldn't find my cat. I thought he had got out. After a day of searching I heard a faint meow in the bathroom and it dawned on me. My cat had been walled in.

I had to rip out the entire knee wall and coax him out. He had gone down into a hole into the space between the first floor ceiling and second floor. The drywall guy tried to charge me to fix it and I just said to him "You walled in my fscking cat. You're lucky you're still walking."

I never got a bill.

I remember that. You posted a wallpaper quality picture of said cat afterwards, if I remember right. Very pretty animal.

the blanket is still a casualty...It is a handmade one too! I will concoct some apparatus later today and hopefully retrieve the poor blanket. If you're a spiritual person, please keep the blanket in your thoughts.

maybe you can train the cat to go back down into the hole and attach a grapple hook to the blanket so you can pull it out

consider it, if the cat is smart

Well of course she wouldn't grab on.

"Oh yeah, that's BS man, you dropped the first one. You want me to get on this one now? What's the first one for? To cushion my body as it plummets back down here? Dream on."

So then you used a bucket. Good call. Everyone knows cats love buckets. I has a bucket!!!!

I'm surprised he even tried to charge you for that. Build a wall around someone else's pet, and then refuse to make reparations. Impressive.

And again, the cat's thoughts:
"Oh snap, he found out that it was me who crapped on the livingroom carpet, now he's finally going to kill me."

My cat did something similar. I was doing a bunch of laundry and after I got finished folding everything I put up the last of the towels and closed the door. I failed to notice the little ball of fur curled up on the sheets I had just put up on the bottom shelf. Several hours later I was wondering where my cat was as he usually tries to climb into my lap when I'm at my desk. I opened the closet, he looks up at me, yawns, and walks on out.
